He said what's happening on Maui is comparable to the biggest mainland fires you can think of."Maui is not used to the type of wildfire that we see on the mainland," Maj. Troy Trimmer said. "And so obviously, when 60 mph winds gust in a community like Lahaina that is incredibly compact — just for the reality that there is very little land mass and it's historic, it's pretty devastating."The hall of historic Waiola Church in ...Voters to decide on $550 million plan to fund Douglas County schools

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) — Douglas County school board members unanimously voted to place two questions on the November ballot that would go toward funding schools. A $66 million mill levy proposal would pay teachers more money, while a $484 million bond would go toward school and security improvements. The questions are already sparking a lot of conversation. Some folks living in the county where these questions are being raised want the schools to look for other funding methods."The language says, 'Shall your taxes be raised?' I don't think it has a really good shot of passing," said FOX31 political analyst Michael Fields, a Republican strategist. "Which I think instead of taking all this time as a district to talk about how to increase taxes at the worst possible time, they should be focusing in on: How do you make sure kids ...Homeowner accused of arson in fire that killed dog

Officials feared the death toll could rise.As winds diminished somewhat, some aircraft resumed flights, enabling pilots to view the full scope of the devastation. Tom Melvin is an associate professor in Medical Device Regulatory Affairs in the School of Medicine, Trinity College Dublin. Many of us have engaged with chatbots, the computerized conversational programs meant to help with things like our banking or a utility company query. The recent introduction of large language models (LLMs) has turbocharged these bots and their abilities, as neural network language models can now use patterns of speech from vast numbers of sources to generate human-like interactive conversations. The use of chatbots in medicine, specifically, has a much longer history than one might think. In 1966, Joseph Weizenbaum at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology developed the ELIZA program, which used natural language processing to mimic a psychotherapist by offering questions or reflections based on text input from a “patient.”As one might imagine, given the early stages of computer programming, this was a simple program. However, for some of those who use...Trump is a serious threat to the union of American states

Peter van Dalen is a Dutch member of the European Parliament.Standing in front of the Capitol building in Washington on March 4, 1865, then President Abraham Lincoln stirred the hearts of his audience, declaring America should have “malice toward none and charity for all.”It was Lincoln’s second inaugural address, and he was determined to heal a divided nation just weeks away from the formal end of its bloody civil war, setting out his aim “to achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace, among ourselves, and with all nations.”But this magnificent and evocative speech, as well as the actions of one of America’s greatest Republicans, now stands in brutal contrast to the words and deeds of another Republican — former United States President Donald J. Trump.Trump is focused on his own glory, on his own interests — not the nation’s. He hurls grapes of wrath around the country. And his real menace was finally brought home in the report by the Bipartisan Congressional Inquiry Committee on...Latest news
