Canadian merchandise trade surplus slips to $422M in February: StatCan OTTAWA — Statistics Canada says the country’s merchandise trade surplus fell to $422 million in February as exports fell more than imports.The federal agency says the result compared with a revised surplus of $1.2 billion for January. The initial reading for the first month of the year put the surplus at $1.9 billion.For February, total exports fell 2.4 per cent to $65.0 billion as exports of metal and non-metallic mineral products decreased 5.4 per cent and motor vehicles and parts dropped 4.4 per cent.Meanwhile, total imports fell 1.3 per cent to $64.6 billion in February. The drop came as imports of industrial machinery, equipment and parts fell 8.7 per cent after hitting a record high in January.Imports of motor vehicles and parts lost 5.3 per cent in February, while consumer goods rose 6.9 per cent to partly offset the overall drop.In volume terms, total exports fell 0.9 per cent, while imports fell 0.8 per cent.This report by The Canadian Press was first published April ...

WATCH LIVE: Firefighter 'very critical' as CFD battles Gold Coast fire CHICAGO — The Chicago Fire Department is currently battling a high-rise fire on inner Lake Shore Drive in the Gold Coast that has injured two firefighters, one critically.At around 7:20 a.m., CFD tweeted that they responded to the 1200 block of North Lake Shore Drive, which is near the intersection of Division, for a still-and-box response.Initially, CFD said two firefighters have been injured. Then a short time later, a mayday response was called for a firefighter down. One firefighter is in "very" critical condition and another is in fair condition.CFD said the main body of the fire is out and the mayday response has been secured. (WFLA) – A Florida college student is in critical condition after police say he accidentally shot himself while walking on campus Tuesday.According to WESH, 39-year-old Joseph Delbuono, a student at Daytona State College, shot himself while he was walking through the parking lot. The Daytona Beach Police Department said no one else was injured during the incident. “This appears to be an accidental discharge resulting in a gunshot wound to the upper thigh,” Daytona Beach police Chief Jakari Young said Tuesday. (NEWS10) -- According to the latest poll by the Siena College Research Institute (SCRI), the New York State Index of Consumer Sentiment stands at 75.0, up 2.7 points from the last measurement in the fourth quarter of 2022. LOUIS - A tax preparer from St. Louis County admitted to preparing at least 23 fraudulent tax returns, creating losses of more than half a million dollars. Darius D. Cobb, 51, of Jennings, pleaded guilty Tuesday to two felony counts of aiding in the preparation of a false and fraudulent tax return. Trending: St. Louis-area April 4 municipal eleciton results According to a plea agreement, Cobb included false information in at least 23 of 200-plus tax returns he prepared between 2017 and 2018. Some of the false information in those returns included fake W-2 forms with false wages and withholdings, false Schedule C forms and false claims for the American Opportunity Credit. In one instance, Cobb reportedly included a business loss of more than $14,000 for one taxpayer, even though the taxpayer was not a business owner. The total losses were around $517,000.
