CapMetro OKs $753M contract for new bus operator amid union concerns

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- The CapMetro board of directors approved Monday a nearly $753.7 million contract with Keolis Transit Services, LLC for bus maintenance and operations, following concerns voiced by union members. Keolis will oversee CapMetro's fixed-route bus operations and maintenance -- specifically, its MetroRapid and MetroBus services. The contractor will also manage the transit agency's current 1,212 bargaining employees along with its 36 operations, safety and general management personnel.MV Transportation, Inc. had been CapMetro's fixed-route contractor, working with the Austin transit authority for more than a decade. On Monday, MV's chief customer success officer, Gary Coles, expressed his gratitude for more than a decade of service to Austin alongside disappointment over the contract's awarding to Keolis. Frustrated by St. Paul’s rent control policy and rhetoric they’ve described as anti-policing, a coalition of labor unions and businesses with ties to the real estate community say they’re on track to raise more than $300,000 in advance of the city’s Nov. 7 elections.The funding is being used a variety of ways — from backing particular candidates for St. Paul City Council to focus-group style surveys and polling, as well as general issue-oriented advertising around the need for more affordable housing and public safety.The “Service St. Paul” political coalition held its first public speak-out Monday at the North Central States Regional Council of Carpenters offices on Olive Street in St. Paul, where they issued their first endorsement for city council — Isaac Russell in Ward 3. GLOVERSVILLE, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- State Police arrested Lee D. Horning Jr., 36, on two counts of rape in the first degree and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. According to police investigations, Horning Jr. reportedly had unwanted sexual contact with a child under 17 on multiple occasions. Horning Jr. was processed and arraigned at the Milton Town Court. ALBANY, N.Y. (WTEN) -- On Monday, Governor Hochul announced the state is deploying an additional 150 national guard members to help with the ongoing migrant crisis. This will total over 2000 national guard members on the asylum seeker mission with 250 national guard members being fully focused on case management, speeding up the process for migrants to exit shelter and attain legal work status. With temporary status for Venezuelans, the Biden administration turns to a familiar tool "Helping them support themselves, helping them leave these shelters because I believe they did not come all these thousands of miles to live in a shelter with hundreds if not, thousands of others," said Governor Hochul. BURLINGTON, Vt. (NEWS10) -- A Rutland man has pled not guilty to drug trafficking charges, according to the United States Attorney's Office for the District of Vermont. Roosevelt Norris, 54, was charged with three counts of distributing cocaine base by a federal grand jury in Burlington. According to the court, Norris allegedly sold drugs to a confidential informant on three separate occasions between July and August. If convicted, Norris faces up to 20 years in prison and a maximum fine of $1 million. ST. LOUIS – One man is dead following a shooting in the Vandeventer neighborhood of north St. Louis City.A spokesperson for the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department says the shooting took place just after 2:20 p.m. in the 3900 block of Page Boulevard, near North Sarah Avenue.Police arrived to find a Black man suffering from a gunshot wound to his head. COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — A Missouri judge tossed Republican-written ballot summary language Monday that described several proposed constitutional amendments as allowing “dangerous and unregulated abortions until live birth.”Cole County Circuit Judge Jon Beetem rewrote the ballot summary to describe the language as establishing the “right to make decisions about reproductive health care, including abortion and contraception,” as well as undoing the state’s almost total ban on abortions.In Missouri, summaries are provided to voters on ballots to help quickly explain sometimes lengthy and complicated proposals. The office of Republican Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft, which wrote the summaries, plans to appeal.“We will not stand idly by while the courts hide the effects of this amendment and mislead the people as to what they may very well be voting on next year,” spokesperson JoDonn Chaney said.
