NBA, players still talking about new deal as deadline looms

NEW YORK (AP) — NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said Wednesday he is hopeful that a new collective bargaining agreement between the league and its players can get done by the end of this week, though he stopped short of predicting that a deal would actually get struck.The league and the National Basketball Players Association face a Friday deadline for either side to decide that they will opt out of the deal and end the current CBA on June 30. That opt-out deadline already has been extended twice, and Silver said the NBA’s current plan is to exercise that option if there is no deal by Friday night.“I hope we do get one done,” Silver said at the conclusion of a two-day meeting of the league’s Board of Governors. “Because, honestly, I’m only one side of the negotiation, it’s difficult for me to place odds on whether or not that’s going to happen.”The NBPA did not have any immediate reaction to Silver’s comments. BRIGHTON, Colo. (KDVR) -- A 15-year-old girl was accused of murdering a 44-year-old man in Brighton.According to Brighton police, just after midnight Tuesday, officers went to the 400 block of North 6th Avenue to check the wellbeing of a man that had not been heard from in days. Colorado youth violence at 5-year high plateau Inside, they found 44-year-old Joseph Johnson dead from apparent gunshot wounds. After an investigation, the 15-year-old was identified as a suspect. Newly released surveillance video shows the son of a South Florida celebrity running from police before his arrest in Miami Beach for allegedly assaulting two women. Luther Roderick Campbell II, the son of famous rap artist Uncle Luke of 2 Live Crew, appeared before Miami-Dade Circuit Court Judge Mindy S. Glazer, Wednesday. Campbell is facing charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and resisting an officer.According to police, at around 7 p.m. Tuesday, Campbell was armed with a knife and walked up to two women, telling them, “What did you say?”The incident happened on South Beach, near the famous Big Pink restaurant. The women were behind a car and had something blocking them from Campbell. Four businesses were burglarized after crooks broke through drywall to gain access.7News cameras captured how the burglars were able to make their way into the businesses by using the top of a toilet bowl to break through the drywall. “He came right through that window,” a business owner said. A crook first broke into a window of a dog grooming business. Surveillance footage showed the suspect in the back of the plaza. The suspect was seen using a broom to change the angle of the camera. Authorities say a second victim has been recovered from the scene of a massive fire that burned through a rooming house in New Bedford on Tuesday.The State Fire Marshal’s Office provided the update Wednesday afternoon as officials continue to investigate the cause of the fire at 1305 Acushnet Avenue.According to a news release, the second victim had been found while investigators were using heavy equipment to examine the burnt out, four-story structure.“On behalf of the New Bedford Fire Department, I want to express our heartfelt condolences to Mr. Moreira’s family and loved ones,” New Bedford Fire Chief Scott Kruger said in a statement. “It was deeply important to all of us at the scene that we recover him with respect and dignity as soon as it was possible to do so.”One person had still been unaccounted for as of Wednesday morning, following the fire that killed one other person and injured several others.
