'Banished' words of 2024 released by Michigan university, continuing tradition

SAULTE STE. MARIE, Mich. (WJMN) - Certain words or phrases make their way into the modern vernacular. When used with high frequency, as iconic as some of the lingo may be, it can make your vocabulary seem a bit limited. Regardless of how obsessed you are with today's language, at the end of the day, one Michigan university would like you to stop using the cringe-worthy words and phrases on its latest annual list. Earlier this week, Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie continued its decades-long tradition of banishing a list of popular words from the previous year.To determine the words to be cut, nominations pour in. For the newest list, LSSU says it received more than 2,000 suggestions from 20 different countries. That is at least 500 more submissions than the previous year. MANCHACA, Texas (KXAN) — One person sustained non-life-threatening injuries after a single vehicle rollover crash in Manchaca on Tuesday afternoon, Austin-Travis County EMS shared on social media.The rescue call came in from the 11800 block of Old San Antonio Road, near Onion Creek Drive. Initial reports said a single vehicle rolled over and a patient was trapped inside. Gophers special teams coordinator Rob Wenger will leave his post at the U, a source confirmed to the Pioneer Press on Tuesday.Football Scoop, which first reported the news, said Wenger “stepped down” from the position he held at Minnesota under head coach P.J. Authorities are investigating an inmate’s death at the Washington County Jail in Stillwater.Justice Heinrichs (Courtesy of Destine Fobbs)Justice Heinrichs, 21, of Stillwater, was found unresponsive and not breathing in her assigned, double-occupancy cell at about 12:40 a.m. Friday morning, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. She was the only inmate assigned to the cell, authorities said.Lifesaving measures were immediately initiated by jail staff until responders from the Lakeview EMS and Stillwater Fire Department took over, said Laura Perkins, a spokeswoman for the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.Heinrich was brought to to the Washington County Jail on Dec. 20 from the St. Paul Police Department, according to her booking report. HUDSON, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- El-Shamar T. Thornton, 30, of Hudson, appeared in the City of Hudson Court on Tuesday for a preliminary hearing. According to the Hudson Police, Thornton reportedly broke into a residence at the Hudson Terrace Apartments on Christmas Eve. ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Albany Police say Sky Lemmons-Dixon, 23, who sustained a gunshot wound to the head on Christmas morning has died.
