CHICAGO (AP) — Sophee Langerman was on her way to a bicycle safety rally in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood in June when a car turning right rolled through a red light and slammed into her bike, which she was walking off the curb and into the crosswalk. The car was moving slowly enough that Langerman escaped serious injury, but the bicycle required extensive repairs. To Langerman, it's another argument for ending a practice that almost all U.S. cities have embraced for decades: the legal prerogative for a driver to turn right after stopping at a red light.A dramatic rise in accidents killing or injuring pedestrians and bicyclists has led to a myriad of policy and infrastructure changes, but moves to ban right on red have drawn some of the most intense sentiments on both sides.Washington, D.C.’s City Council last year approved a right-on-red ban that takes effect in 2025. New Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson’s transition plan called for “restricting right turns on red,” but his administr...Chicago Bears at New Orleans Saints: Everything you need to know about the Week 9 game before kickoff

Here’s what you need to know before kickoff (noon, CBS).When will Justin Fields be QB1 again?Bears quarterback Justin Fields practiced Friday afternoon for the first time since dislocating his thumb on his right throwing hand during the Oct. 15 game against the Minnesota Vikings.Fields said at his locker after practice his grip strength is not all the way back and there was still a bit of pain as he participated in a limited fashion. As he and the Bears consider when he can return, Fields said he needs to see “if I’m going to be able to make all the throws and be able to withstand hits and stuff like that during the game.” Read more here.5 things to watch in the Bears-Saints game — plus our Week 9 predictionsColumn: The Superdome has been a house of horrors for Bears QBs. For a fanbase which chants “Who hates Iowa? We hate Iowa!” the final three weeks of the Big Ten regular season should be pretty straight forward. With a 27-26 home loss to Illinois on Saturday, the Gophers fell to 3-3 in Big Ten play. Meanwhile, Iowa improved to 4-2 with a 10-7 win over Northwestern at Wrigley Field. After being in pole position, Gophers will likely now need the first-place Hawkeyes to lose at least two of its final three games for Minnesota to win the Big Ten West Division. The Gophers also need to beat Purdue (1-5) in West Lafayette, Ind., on Saturday and likely top Wisconsin (3-3) at home in the regular-season finale on Nov. 25. In between, the U will be a huge road underdog against No. 1 Ohio State (6-0) on Nov. 18.The Hawkeyes’ final three games are Rutgers (3-3), Illinois (2-4) and at Nebraska (3-3). Given their plodding offense, dropping two of those isn’t outside the realm of possibilities. If the Gophers and Hawkeyes tie atop the West with 5-4 conference record...Real World Economics: Will our creative intellect work to destroy us?

Edward Lotterman“Capitalism is a process of creative destruction,” according to Austrian-American economist Joseph Schumpeter.Yet “capitalism” is such a loaded term, along with “socialism,” that I avoid using it. So think “mixed-market economies” instead.Usually, the benefits from creation outweigh the losses from destruction, but not always. The benefits? The internet and social media, broadly defined, have vastly facilitated many things, including one’s ability to be an academic or pundit. For one grad course paper on sheep production in 1978, I logged 71 hours punching historic data into paper cards. Now I download that same data from a USDA site in less than 30 seconds. And 20 years ago, an editor questioned whether a quip I used was from Dorothy Parker or Anita Loos. “Let me ask a colleague,” Casey told me. “She uses something called Google to look things up.”“Something called Google.”In the years since, work — and life — would never be the sam...Deion Sanders after CU Buffs’ continued inconsistency in loss to Oregon State: “It’s painful”

Shedeur Sanders wasn’t going to quit. The Colorado quarterback was limping around the sidelines while the Buffs trailed No. 16 Oregon State by 18 points in the fourth quarter of Saturday night’s Pac-12 matchup, but he was willing to do whatever it took to give his team a fighting chance.Facing a 2nd-and-34 with 12 minutes left, he threw a 23-yard pass to freshman wide receiver Omarion Miller, then found Xavier Weaver for a 12-yard completion for a first down. A few plays later, Shedeur rocketed the ball across the middle to dual-threat Travis Hunter for a 15-yard touchdown.Sanders went on to throw two touchdowns in the fourth. The only problem was that the Buffs ran out of time, falling to Oregon State, 26-19, at Folsom Field.CU hasn’t played consistently on offense since the season-opener against TCU. Instead, the Buffs tend to catch fire in spurts. Against the Beavers, CU had three points and 52 total yards in the first half before scoring 14 points in their last two possessions o...1 dead, 6 injured in overnight shooting in Denver, police say
