TTC union workers win back right to strike An Ontario Superior Court judge has ruled that provincial government legislation banning TTC workers from striking violates the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, giving them back the right to strike.Effective immediately, the legislation is declared unconstitutional. The province had called for the court to delay the implementation of the decision until March 31, 2024, but Justice Chalmers said the request was “unreasonable.”A spokesman for the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113 calls it an “historic and important decision.”In 2011, the then Liberal government under Premier Dalton McGuinty passed a law banning strikes and lockouts at the TTC. It stemmed from a request made by Toronto City Council to declare the transit system an essential service. At the time, the city estimated TTC work stoppages cost the economy $50 million per day.CityNews has reached out to the TTC and the City of Toronto for comment on the ruling.

Twins’ Carlos Correa on his slow start: ‘I’m talented enough to make adjustments earlier’ Twins shortstop Carlos Correa is of the opinion that two years of a long, drawn-out free agency process has led to slower-than-normal starts at the plate for him in both of his years in Minnesota. But while the Twins’ shortstop believes he has pinpointed the issue, he doesn’t want to use it as an excuse.“I’m talented enough to make adjustments earlier,” Correa said.Five weeks into the season, Correa is hitting just .193 with a .317 on-base percentage and .378 slugging percentage. His 79 OPS+ is 21 percent below league average — and well below his own career 127 OPS+.But his swing, he says, has been making strides since he made an adjustment on the past road trip in Chicago, and Correa believes a turnaround is coming.“It’s just taking me a little more time, but it’s been feeling good,” he said. “I’ve got five more months to make up for it.”Before last season, Correa did not sign a deal until after the lockout, agreeing to a contract with the Twins in March and reporting immediately t...
