Parents, teachers blast Elmwood Park School District leadership after gun safety incident ELMWOOD PARK, Ill. — Families, teachers and staff packed the gym at Elmwood Park High School Wednesday night and delivered a blistering assessment of how the school district handled a crisis situation involving a student with a loaded gun last week."Elmwood park, your bar should be better safe than sorry, not sorry thank goodness we’re safe," said a parent during public comment. "You’ve left doubt in my mind that our captain is not commanding the ship."According to police, a 17-year-old boy was arrested last Monday following reports he left the school's property with a loaded gun in his backpack. The boy was arrested and no one was hurt during the incident, but chief among concerns held by staff and families were that there was no lockdown called while the school handled the situation, and the school only communicated with staff and families about the incident over email.“we just want to make sure that our students feel safe when they are in our buildings, first and foremost, we wan...

Federal judge hears challenge to FDA approval of abortion drug AMARILLO – The future of medication abortion in the United States remains up in the air after a federal judge heard arguments Wednesday in a suit challenging the Food and Drug Administration’s long-standing approval of mifepristone.U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk said he would rule “as soon as possible” on the challenge brought by the Alliance Defending Freedom, a conservative, anti-abortion law firm.ADF is asking Kacsmaryk to suspend — and ultimately withdraw — the FDA’s approval of the medication, which would have nationwide implications, especially in states where abortion remains legal. In the hearing, a lawyer for ADF conceded that this would be unprecedented, but argued that the court had the authority to intervene to prevent harm.Lawyers for the Department of Justice and Danco Laboratories, the pharmaceutical company that produces generic mifepristone, argued that the lawsuit is meritless.Granting a preliminary injunction would be “depriving patients and doctors of a sa...

Adult certification hearing for Harding High School stabbing suspect pushed back 60 days A Ramsey County district judge on Wednesday pushed back to May an adult certification hearing for Nosakhere Holmes, who is accused of fatally stabbing a fellow Harding student in a hallway of the St. Paul high school last month. The hearing was supposed to happen Wednesday before Judge JaPaul Harris. However, Assistant Ramsey County Attorney Muteeat Lawal told the judge at the start of the hearing that a certification study had not been completed because the 16-year-old had chosen not to speak with a psychologist and a probation worker. That prompted Harris to call a recess so that Holmes’ attorney from the public defender’s office, Sharon Thompson-Carter, could further discuss with the teen and his parents the certification process and ask them how they wanted to proceed.Holmes faces a second-degree unintentional murder charge in the Feb. 10 death of Devin Scott, a 15-year-old sophomore. A Feb. 14 juvenile petition describes a hallway fight between him and Scott, with the assis...

Citing safety, Minnesota DFL lawmakers push to ban ‘no-knock’ warrants Minnesota Democrats are renewing their push to ban no-knock warrants after legislation stalled in previous years under politically divided government.“Is the pursuit of justice worth death if it is avoidable?” Rep. Brion Curran, DFL-Vadnais Heights, asked her colleagues on the House public safety committee. The panel debated and advanced Curran’s bill banning no-knock warrants Wednesday evening on an 8-5 vote.Curran, a former police officer, described no-knock warrants — when police enter a premises unannounced — as dangerous for everyone involved. She said there are better ways to conduct searches, even when there is the threat of violence or the risk of losing evidence.“This is about our right to know for certain that when someone enters your home unannounced, you don’t need to second-guess if that person might be a police officer,” Curran said.Several Republicans on the committee disagreed with the proposal, including Rep. Paul Novotny, R-Elk R...

Avs beat Maple Leafs in shootout in Toronto after riveting test of defenses TORONTO — A few of the newest relics in the Hockey Hall of Fame include a jersey worn by Nathan MacKinnon in the 2022 Stanley Cup-clinching game, a prestigious trophy with a spot reserved for Cale Makar’s engraved name and a burgundy-bejeweled ring. The reminders of Colorado’s accomplishment last season are resting behind glass two blocks away from Scotiabank Arena, where this season’s Avs encountered one of their last major tests of the 2022-23 regular season Wednesday. If they hope to repeat, there’s a chance they’ll have to go through Toronto again after a captivating 2-1 shootout win in which Alexandar Georgiev saved all three shots.Nathan MacKinnon scored the only shootout goal, going five-hole.Overtime, sometimes an overly timid stalemate in the 3-on-3 era, was riveting here. Both offenses remained aggressive. Both defenses were clutch. Valeri Nichushkin nearly scored a rebound winner. Michael Bunting hit a crossbar for the Leafs. With 16 game...

Rockies spring training report: German Marquez sharp vs. Cubs Like a realtor, Rockies right-hander German Marquez knows what’s important: location, location, location.Earlier in spring training, Marquez told The Post he was mislocating his fastball too often last season, and also noted that he needs “more rise on the four-seam fastball and more sink on the two-seam fastball.”So far this spring training, Marquez is meeting those goals. Tuesday night, he pitched four scoreless innings with seven strikeouts and no walks against the Cubs.“I’ve been working a lot on my delivery, staying behind the ball,” Marquez told MLB.com. “I feel like I had been dropping my fingers a little bit.”A slight hamstring tweak slowed Marquez at the beginning of spring training but in six innings across his two Cactus League starts, he has not allowed a run while fanning nine and walking just one.Position update: Ryan McMahon, who has moved from third base to second to fill the hole left by Brendan Rodgers’ shoulder injur...
