ST. LOUIS - Shanisah Knight and her husband Jason typically go out for breakfast Sunday mornings. The first day of 2023 happened to fall on a Sunday and what seemed like a random conversation on New Year's Day led to a new business. Jason proposed starting a diner.Jason has decades of experience working in restaurant management. Shani has a background in customer service, operations, and accounting. They were looking for the right place when the City Diner's lease became available. It seemed like a great fit."We were excited when it came for lease. Residents of metropolitan Los Angeles and California’s Inland Empire don’t get high marks when it comes to neighborly love.A new study from AmeriCorps and the U.S. Census Bureau titled "Volunteering and Civic Life in America" shows metro L.A. and the Riverside area have some of the lowest rates of volunteerism among the nation's largest cities.The data was gathered from September 2020-21 and ranked 12 metro areas based on formal volunteering, like belonging to an organization, and “informal helping,” defined as exchanging favors with a neighbor.Riverside ranked dead last in formal volunteering with just 9% of those surveyed saying they belong to an organization that helps others. Police have arrested a suspect who allegedly used a permanent marker to vandalize an Islamic Center in Koreatown with hateful comments over the weekend.The incident occurred around 12:40 a.m. Sunday at the Islamic Center of Southern California, located at 434 S. Vermont Ave., according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The man is accused of writing “anti-Islamic hate words” on the property and then running from the area north on Vermont Avenue.Police released a surveillance image of the suspect and described him as being around 40 to 50 years old, 5 feet 9 inches tall and 180 pounds. BERKELEY — An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death of a woman whose body was found Monday evening in the water at the Berkeley Marina, authorities said.The woman’s name has not yet been released.She was found about 7 p.m. Monday after a caller to police reported a body floating against the rocks in the water near the former HS Lordships Restaurant on Seawall Drive.Firefighters retrieved the body from the water and began life-saving measures. But the woman was pronounced dead there, authorities said.Authorities have not said if there was any trauma to the body or how long they believe the woman had been in the water.
