Purdue is back atop The Associated Press Top 25 men’s college basketball poll, right where it spent so much of last season. The Boilermakers ascended to No. 1 on Monday after an impressive run through a loaded field at the Maui Invitational. They beat Gonzaga, Tennessee and Marquette — three of the top 11 teams in the nation — in consecutive days, and that was enough to earn 60 of 63 first-place votes from the national panel of Top 25 voters. It took the Boilermakers until Dec. 12 to reach No. 1 last year, where they spent seven weeks over two different stints.“Our guys were resilient, I thought they hung in there, and I thought at times we didn’t play our best basketball in the three days, but I thought we played really hard,” Purdue coach Matt Painter said after the Maui Invitational. “We competed, and that is what you got to do. You got to just sometimes hang in there and just keep competing and make one more play.”Purdue replaced preseason No. 1 Kansas, which fell to fifth a...POLL ALERT: Purdue is back at No. 1 in the AP Top 25 men’s poll; Arizona, Marquette, UConn and Kansas round out top five

BRUSSELS — EU countries want the Commission to cut at least 20 percent, or around €13 billion, from its proposed midterm budget increase, according to two EU diplomats. The EU executive had asked in June for €66 billion in additional funds from national capitals to cover unexpected spending, arguing the bloc’s coffers have been depleted by multiple crises, from the pandemic to the war in Ukraine. But member countries have broadly rejected approving that increase in full, agreeing that the Commission must trim the headline figure by at least 20 percent, according to the diplomats, who like the other diplomat quoted in this piece, were granted anonymity to discuss backchannel communications. “You can’t ask only one group of member states (the net contributors) to make a sacrifice, while another group reaps most of the benefits,” a third diplomat said. “That would undermine a sense of fairness and solidarity in the Union.”The clock is ti...Former President Jimmy Carter expected to attend wife’s memorial service

If I have a name tag, it’s on that,” said Langford, who works as a primary care provider in Seminole County, Florida. He holds a doctorate of nursing practice, the highest degree available in his field. Like a Ph.D., it confers on him the “Dr.” title, but he says he explains to patients what that means, and how his role and education differ from that of a physician: “When I meet anyone, I want to make sure I’m educating them about who I am.”A Florida bill lawmakers considered this year would have barred Langford and others with similar credentials from using the “Dr.” title in clinical settings.
