WATCH: Crews use helicopter to dump water on Lynn brush fire Crews were at work in Lynn Monday battling what city officials described as “ongoing forest fires” within the Lynn Woods Reservation. SKY7-HD was over the scene around 3:30 p.m. where a helicopter could be collecting water and dropping it on flames as part of the fire response. The city of Lynn shared a message on social media earlier in the day Monday around 12:45 p.m. announcing that all trails north of Walden Pond within the Lynn Woods had been closed due to fires. Officials continued, saying trails will remain closed until further notices. Crews previously responded to the Lynn Woods last week as flames from a brush fire pushed close to homes in the area. While close to residential properties, fire officials said there was no immediate threat and no homes were damaged. Elsewhere in Massachusetts, other brush fires drew an emergency response Monday, including one in Lowell seen burning close to area train tracks.

Mild May, Midweek Frost!

Published Tue, 19 Nov 2024 11:29:43 GMT

Mild May, Midweek Frost! We are half way through May (can you believe that?!) so how is the month shaping up so far? Warm and dry. Temperatures for the first two weeks are running nearly 4° above average with rainfall lacking by over an inch in Boston. The dry conditions this month are leading to an increased fire risk. We’ve had brush fires sparking and spreading very easily the last few days — most notably in Lynn with Friday’s fire reigniting today. With little change in the weather pattern ahead, we have a fire weather watch in effect for both Tuesday and Wednesday across southern New England.Tomorrow will be another warm day (actually warmer than today) and the wind will pick up as well, adding to that fire risk. We’ll see wind gusts tomorrow near 30 mph.Like I said earlier, there’s not much change in the forecast so expect more warm air this week. We have one cool day in the middle of the week but other than that the mild air will dominate all the way into next weekend.Rai...

Remainder of JV lacrosse season canceled after incident at Arlington Catholic High School What is left of the JV lacrosse season at Arlington Catholic High School has been canceled after a recent incident in a locker room, school officials said. The situation stems from an issue on Tuesday where Arlington Catholic Principal John Graceffa said an athlete was harassed. Sources told 7NEWS part of the incident included a player getting hit with a belt. Graceffa said the team’s coach was just outside, heard the commotion and stopped everything. The student who was harassed, Graceffa said, is okay. The team, though, needed to learn a lesson, he continued. “We have a high standard of conduct and that standard is going to be reinforced by the fact of how there’s consequences to pay if you don’t behave yourself appropriately,” Graceffa said. Arlington Catholic High School Varsity Lacrosse Captain Ryan Noonan said this kind of behavior is not okay and not part of any hazing ritual among the team. “I’m guessing most of the kids probably had nothing t...

Mets Notes: Dominic Leone confident coming to team

Mets Notes: Dominic Leone confident coming to team WASHINGTON — Mets’ right-hander Dominic Leone took the loss Sunday in the first game of a doubleheader against the Washington Nationals because of one bad pitch. He missed up and in with a cutter to CJ Abrams in the seventh inning of a tie game. Abrams took it over the fence for the go-ahead homer to hand the Mets, and by default Leone, a loss.It was the 31-year-old right-hander’s first loss with the Mets but it certainly wasn’t the first of his career. The veteran reliever has struggled to maintain consistency with control throughout his career. The one thing he doesn’t struggle with after a decade in the Major Leagues is his confidence.“Yesterday, I make one bad pitch in two innings and it ends up in a loss,” Leone told the Daily News on Monday at Nationals Park. “But you have to show up the next day.”The Mets signed Leone to a one-year contract on May 4. He had pitched so well in Triple-A with the Texas Rangers to start the se...

Preakness 2023: Worry over deaths pervades as horse racing world turns its eyes to Baltimore Childs Walker | Baltimore SunTo a person, they cross their fingers or say a small prayer every time a major race draws near: Please, please do not let a horse breakdown. Those who love thoroughbred racing agree that among all the difficulties facing their sport, none is more existentially threatening than public dismay over the deaths of racehorses. This disquiet peaked again last week after seven horses died or suffered fatal injuries in the run-up to the Kentucky Derby, the most-watched event on the American racing calendar. Questions of racetrack safety will remain on the front burner as those scrutinizing the sport turn their gaze to Baltimore and Saturday’s Preakness Stakes. As the gloomy headlines emerged one after another from Kentucky, it hardly mattered that the rate of racing-related deaths dropped 37.5% from 2009 to 2022 or that state racing officials took swift action to suspend the trainer, Saffie Joseph Jr., who had two horses die suddenly and inexplicably. They also scr...

Travel: Key West’s Conch Republic is a state of mind

Travel: Key West’s Conch Republic is a state of mind Forty-one years ago, on April 23, 1982, a Border Patrol blockade of the Florida Keys in search of drugs and undocumented immigrants led to the birth of the Conch Republic. Infuriated Keys residents seceded from the union to protest being treated like a foreign country and the massive traffic jam that temporarily cut them off from the rest of America.Today, the city of Key West has turned this event into an annual weeklong party that celebrates the birth of the Conch Republic. While the Conch Republic never materialized as an actual country, it still exists as a state of mind, symbolizing Key West’s, offbeat, nonconformist nature where the locals enjoy an anything-goes lifestyle supported by a healthy tourist industry. Tourists enjoy this laidback vibe too. You can walk down the streets of Key West carrying an alcoholic beverage and no one cares as long as it’s in a can or a plastic cup (no glass, please).A mock sea battle between the Conch Republic and the Coast Guard takes place du...

Brampton promises to sue Mississauga if it splits from Peel Region and doesn’t pay up Mississauga has long been asking to break off from Peel Region and go out on their own and Premier Doug Ford has strongly hinted he will allow it.The decisions would set the stage for Mississauga and Brampton to undergo a nasty “divorce.”“I’ve always been for an independent Mississauga, you can’t have a city size of 800,000 people continuing to grow being tied to other jurisdiction,” Ford commented on Monday. That statement was music to Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie’s ears.“I’m delighted the premier has publicly stated he is on the way to separate Peel, gives me great pleasure,” shared Crombie. “I know he is fulfilling a promise to former Mayor Hazel McCallion and myself, [it] makes great sense we go our separate ways.”The provincial government has not made the official announcement to separate Mississauga from Brampton and Caledon yet. However, once that happens, finances will have to be sorted out.Meanwhile, ...
