Published Tue, 19 Nov 2024 00:47:20 GMT
MINNEAPOLIS — Consider the alternate reality in which the Giants signed Carlos Correa. His ankle was a nonissue. The prematurely scheduled press conference actually took place on that Tuesday before Christmas. For the next 10 years, he would wear “San Francisco” across his chest, at an average annual rate of $35 million.Would Correa have already heard boos from fans at Oracle Park? Would the youth movement, namely Casey Schmitt, that has invigorated the Giants over the past two weeks have arrived yet? Would J.D. Davis and Thairo Estrada have emerged as All-Star caliber players, if a 36-year-old Brandon Crawford was instead taking up one of the spots at second or third base? The Giants just might be asking themselves these questions — and breathing a sigh of relief — as they began a three-game series Monday in Minnesota.Correa re-signed with the Twins at a discounted rate a few weeks after his introductory press conference in San Francisco was abruptly called off. The NFL’s Mr. Irrelevant just generated The Brock Purdy Rule.A third quarterback will be allowed to suit up in games, without costing teams an active roster spot, all so NFL teams aren’t left short-handed like the 49ers were when Brock Purdy and then Josh Johnson got hurt with a Super Bowl berth at stake four months ago. That bylaw was approved by NFL owners Monday as their spring meeting got underway in Minneapolis, the league announced.Back in the 49ers’ NFC Championship Game defeat on Jan. 29 to the Philadelphia Eagles, the 49ers had a quarterback catastrophe. They did not have a third quarterback to dress, however. Jimmy Garoppolo was ruled out two days earlier, as he’d yet to practice since breaking his foot Dec. 4. Also, the 49ers waived Jacob Eason from their practice squad Jan. 3, prior to the regular-season finale.Purdy, who’d won eight games since replacing Garoppolo, got hurt on the 49ers’ opening possession, with his ulnar collateral li...Supreme Court ducks fight over foie gras, leaving California ban in place

By Ariane de Vogue | CNN Supreme Court ReporterThe Supreme Court declined on Monday to take up a challenge brought by Canadian duck and goose farmers who sought to challenge California’s ban on foie gras and argued that the controversial delicacy is the most “maligned and misunderstood food in the world.”The court did not explain its thinking, but it comes after the justices upheld a California law that bars the sale of pork produced in other states unless the sow was housed in conditions that allowed her to move freely. In the foie gras case – brought by the farmers as well as a New York producer of the product and a chef who wishes to sell it in California – the petitioners argued that the animals are raised to produce the fatty liver known as foie gras and that the producers are “law-abiding citizens who fully comply with their jurisdictions’ strict laws” to ensure the protection of animals. In court papers, they said that they “care about their animals just as much as any Californ...Pac-12 football win totals for 2023: USC, Oregon and UW lead the way

If the oddsmakers are correct, the Pac-12 will produce a stellar season in the final year of its current existence.Six teams carry win totals of at least 8.5, according to projections released this spring by DraftKings.USC leads the group with a baseline outlook of 10 wins, followed by Oregon (9.5), Washington (9), then Oregon State, Utah and UCLA (8.5).We think the outlook is a tad too rosy for a few teams given the schedules, which are provided below. Then again, several teams with bleak outlooks are well positioned to exceed the totals published by DraftKings. Here we go …ArizonaO/U total: 5 winsHome games (six): NAU, UTEP, Washington, Oregon State, UCLA, UtahRoad games (six): Mississippi State, Stanford, USC, WSU, Colorado, ASUOur pick: Over 5Comment: Six wins would be a major step forward for the program, and that bar is well within reach given the array of winnable road assignments. But the key games are at home: Oregon State and UCLA. The Wildcats must win at least one.Ar...One teen shot, another stabbed in downtown Redwood City
