St. Charles' Zumbehl Road reopening today ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. - One of the busiest streets in St. Charles is set to reopen later Wednesday morning with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.Part of Zumbehl Road has been under construction for the past three months. The good news is that city leaders will take the barricades down later Wednesday morning.The $5.6 million project is upgrading the bridge and storm drains that have been falling apart for nearly 40 years. Crews have installed larger concrete culverts to replace old metal pipes, and they're also replacing the Zumbehl Bridge and sidewalk.While Wednesday marks a significant milestone in the 'Zumbehl Road Culvert Replacement Project,' we should mention intermittent lane closures will occur for a couple of weeks for construction on sidewalks and the surrounding landscaping. Fatal and officer-involved crash shuts down two I-70 WB locations ST. LOUIS - Interstate 70 westbound was shut down in two areas overnight after two different crashes. One was deadly. The other involved a St. Louis City police unit.The second crash, involving the St. Louis City Police Unit, took place just off I-70 and Salisbury in north St. Louis. The scene has since cleared, but for a time earlier, a stretch of I-70 westbound here was closed while police investigated the incident.The situation unfolded around 3:45 a.m. Authorities told FOX 2 that a St. Louis City officer was operating a marked vehicle on I-70 westbound when another driver rear-ended the vehicle. The impact caused the officer to lose control and hit the concrete center median.We're told the officer was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. Golden Gate Bridge nears last phase of quake upgrades Golden Gate Bridge officials are preparing to launch the final and largest phase of a decades-long project to make the 85-year-old structure withstand stronger earthquakes.The Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District plans to select a construction contractor later this year to begin preliminary work on the estimated $880 million final phase. The project will upgrade the main span and the towers and allow the bridge to withstand a magnitude 8.3 quake, which would be comparable to the destructive 1906 San Francisco earthquake.“For us, we really are going through one of the most important undertakings on this bridge,” said district engineer Ewa Bauer-Furbush. “That’s the project for us.”The seismic retrofit project, which was launched in 1997, was prompted by the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989.
