Probably not, experts say

MILAN (AP) — A still-life fresco discovered recently in the Pompeii archaeological site looks like a pizza, but it's not, experts at the archaeological site said Tuesday. They noted that key ingredients needed to make Italy's iconic dish — tomatoes and mozzarella — were not available when the fresco was painted some 2,000 years ago.Tomatoes were only introduced to Europe from the Americas a few centuries ago, and some histories have it that the discovery of mozzarella led directly to the invention of pizza in nearby Naples in the 1700s.The image is instead believed to be a focaccia covered with fruit, including pomegranate and possibly dates, finished with spices or a type of pesto, experts said. In the fresco, it is served on a silver plate and a wine chalice stands next to it. ATLANTA — Joe Ryan twirled around, bent his knees, leaned back and watched the first pitch out of his hand sail through the sky and land beyond the wall in right-center. It was a sign of things to come for both Ryan and the Braves’ offense.Ryan has been one of the best pitchers in the majors this season, but on Tuesday, one of the best offenses in baseball prevailed, jumping all over him. Ryan surrendered five home runs and lasted just three innings in a 6-2 loss to the Braves at Truist Park. The second batter of the game, Ozzie Albies, tripled off Ryan. Two more home runs — one from Austin Riley, the other from Sean Murphy — followed as the Braves punished Ryan’s fastball. The very next inning, the Braves’ offense was at it again, and this time, it was a slider that Michael Harris II got ahold of and a splitter that Ronald Acuña Jr. took out of the park for his second of the night.Ryan allowed a pair of singles in the third inning, but worked out of the jam before departing. Sea lions have been attacking people at the beach in Orange County who get too close and marine wildlife experts believe the mammals may be acting aggressively after being sickened by poisonous algal blooms. At the entrance to Dana Strands Beach in Dana Point is a warning to visitors about an aggressive sea lion in the area, one of at least three beaches where people have been bitten in the last several days. “We’ve actually seen a number of surfers in the water that have been bit by sea lions and those sea lions are more likely to be sea lions that have had a seizure and are completely unaware of their surroundings, just erratically swimming and then they bump into somebody and bit somebody,” Dr. Alissa Deming of the Pacific Marine Mammal Center told KTLA. Deming also said the aggression in the sea lions is likely related to the dramatic increase in sick marine mammals needing rescue because of a toxic algal bloom in Southern Californian waters in recent weeks.
