NY’s power to regulate religious schools trimmed by judge

NY’s power to regulate religious schools trimmed by judge ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Parents cannot be required to pull their children from private schools in New York that fail to meet state-designated standards, a judge decided, striking down a key provision of rules recently passed to strengthen oversight of such schools, including those specializing in religious education. The ruling in a state trial court in Albany came in response to a lawsuit brought by ultra-Orthodox schools, called yeshivas, and related advocacy groups over education rules enacted last fall. Under the rules, the state’s 1,800 private and religious schools must provide an education that is “substantially equivalent” to that of a public school. Opponents in the ultra-Orthodox community say the rules improperly target yeshivas, some of which focus intently on religious instruction with far less teaching in secular subjects such as English, math and science.Judge Christina Ryba on Thursday rejected an argument that the state regulations were unconstitutional. But she said st...

Trevor Bauer, shunned by MLB, introduced by Japanese team

Trevor Bauer, shunned by MLB, introduced by Japanese team YOKOHAMA, Japan (AP) — The Trevor Bauer era in Japan began Friday at an introductory news conference, where he pulled a blue and white Yokohama DeNA BayStars jersey over a white shirt and red tie. The 2020 Cy Young Award winner is in Japan on a one-year deal that could let him prove himself and return to Major League Baseball, where he was unable to find work this season even after an arbitrator reduced his unprecedented 324-game suspension for violating the league’s domestic violence and sexual assault policy. He was cut in January by the Los Angeles Dodgers, who still owe him $22.5 million this season. Not a single Japanese reporter asked him about his suspension in the United States or the circumstances surrounding it.The only question about it came from The Associated Press. Bauer disputed the fact the question suggested he was suspended from the major leagues.“I don’t believe that’s accurate,” he said of the suspension. “But I’m excited to be here. I’m ex...

‘Everything has changed’: Users of recalled eye drops describe permanent vision problems after infections (CNN) — Renee Martray of South Carolina has severe and permanent corneal scarring resulting in vision loss. She says it’s like trying to peer through eyeglasses that have been dipped in oil.Nancy Montz of Ohio developed a corneal ulcer, spent three weeks in the hospital and lost vision in her left eye.Carla Oliva of Florida developed a severe eye infection and, when treatment failed, had to have her right eye removed. She’s now legally blind. The women said their problems began after they used EzriCare Artificial Tears, which is part of a US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and US Food and Drug Administration investigation into a multistate outbreak of a rare strain of bacteria.EzriCare said in a statement last month that when it learned of the investigation January 20, it was not aware of any testing that definitively linked the outbreak to its product.“Nonetheless, we immediately took action to stop any further distribution...

Nets fall apart in crunch time vs. Cavs, 5-game losing streak has team facing reality of play-in tournament

Nets fall apart in crunch time vs. Cavs, 5-game losing streak has team facing reality of play-in tournament Dorian Finney-Smith said one word: “oof.”Joe Harris took a deep breath.Mikal Bridges said he didn’t have an answer for the question.By the 2:30 mark of the fourth quarter of Thursday’s matchup against the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Nets felt they had deserved to win.And by the time the clock struck 0.7 — after Donovan Mitchell rebounded his own missed free throw, and the ball miraculously found Cavs’ guard Isaac Okoro wide-open for the game-winning three — the Nets officially found themselves in play-in tournament territory. The Nets led by 10 with 6:19 to go in the fourth quarter and held an eight-point lead with just over two minutes left. They folded under a series of turnovers that gave the Cavs easy offense in transition, wiping away what the team felt was 45 minutes of good basketball.“I felt like we deserved to win that game because we did a lot of good things throughout the course of the night. Now we have to let that game go and ...

Bruins notebook: This weekend could be a tone-setter for B’s

Bruins notebook: This weekend could be a tone-setter for B’s The Bruins’ back-to-back games this weekend had appeared to be a pivotal two-game set for months. They will play the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday (1 p.m.) at the Garden and then travel to Carolina to play the Hurricanes on Sunday (5 p.m.).But the importance of these two games has changed. Standings-wise, Saturday’s game does not matter much at all. The B’s have all but sewn up the Atlantic Division (a win on Saturday or a regulation loss by Toronto will clinch the Atlantic). Meanwhile the Bolts won’t be caught from behind by Florida and their hopes of catching Toronto for second-place are dimming.Psychologically, however, a game against a potential second round opponent at this point in the season is not a throwaway.Neither team wants to lay an egg in this situation and, to be honest, both clubs could stand to manufacture a good performance. The B’s are riding a five-game win streak but have needed superb goaltending performances from Linus Ullmark a...
