Despite ruling, UK will still try to send migrants to Rwanda

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 10:22:56 GMT

By Jill Lawless | Associated PressLONDON — The British government said Wednesday it will still try to send some migrants on a one-way trip to Rwanda, despite the U.K. Supreme Court ruling that the contentious plan is unlawful because asylum-seekers would not be safe in the African country. In a major blow to one of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak ‘s key policies, the country’s top court ruled that asylum-seekers sent to Rwanda would be “at real risk of ill-treatment” because they could be returned to the conflict-wracked home countries they’d fled.Sunak, who has pledged to stop migrants reaching Britain in small boats across the English Channel, said the ruling “was not the outcome we wanted” but vowed to press on with the plan and send the first deportation flights to Rwanda by next spring. He said the court had “confirmed that the principle of removing asylum-seekers to a safe third country is lawful,” even as it ruled Rwanda unsafe.S...

Minnesota braces for wild ‘super pigs’ from Canada

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 10:22:56 GMT

With wild “super pigs” just across the border in Canada and feral hogs slowly expanding their range in nearby states, the Minnesota Legislature has asked the state’s Department of Natural Resources to make a plan to thwart any wild swine invasion.Lawmakers earlier this year ordered the agency to review protocols, regulations and laws dealing with feral hogs as well as mink farms, and report back in 2024 on any changes that should be made to make sure the state is ready. The Department of Agriculture, Board of Animal Health and Department of Health also are part of the effort.Canadian researchers have called wild pigs “ecological train wrecks” that can cause soil erosion, degrade water quality, destroy crops and prey on small mammals and birds. The researchers at the University of Saskatchewan’s Canadian Wild Pig Research Project made headlines earlier this year when they reported the nation’s population of large, wild pigs was growing rapidly and essentially uncontrollable — ni...

Draymond Green’s history with Rudy Gobert, NBA could get him suspended

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 10:22:56 GMT

SAN FRANCISCO — Warriors veteran Draymond Green could face a suspension for putting Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert in a headlock during a scuffle between both teams during Tuesday night’s game. The fight unfolded two minutes after tipoff, before either team scored, when Klay Thompson and Jaden McDaniels got into a skirmish after a handsy box-out. McDaniels ripped Thompson’s jersey as they pushed and pulled each other. When both teams entered the fray to pull the two apart, Green caught Rudy Gobert pulling Thompson away from the scuffle by the neck and within a second grabbed Gobert in a headlock to pull him away.Green didn’t let go of Gobert for nine seconds, was issued a Flagrant 2 foul and ejected alongside Thompson and McDaniels. Officials deemed Gobert a “peacemaker” and didn’t punish him. A suspension for Green is likely in order as the NBA is reportedly reviewing the incident and interviewing players involved, according to ES...

Kurtenbach: Draymond Green’s chokehold of Rudy Gobert was justifiable, but he’ll still be suspended

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 10:22:56 GMT

I hope you’re all ready for several new episodes of the Draymond Green Show podcast.Because the star of the show is going to be taking some time away from his day job.Green’s chokehold of Rudy Gobert in Tuesday’s Warriors loss to the Timberwolves was, as Green would say on the show, “absolutely incredible.” His textbook form and his dragging of the 7-foot-1 center down the court would make a UFC grappler envious.https://i.giphy.com/media/bn7M8LSMz9RAMUAymi/giphy.mp4 That chokehold is also well beyond the scope of the sport of basketball, and the NBA will justifiably suspend Green before Thursday’s game with the Thunder.A suspension is coming — on that, there’s consensus. How long that suspension will be is anyone’s guess as of Wednesday morning. It’s impossible for you, me, or NBA commissioner Adam Silver to be objective regarding Green. Not after 12 seasons in the league. Not after that many direct shots to opponents’ ...

By Najib Jobain, Jack Jeffrey and Samy Magdy | Associated PressKHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip — Israeli troops on Wednesday stormed into Gaza’s largest hospital, searching for traces of Hamas inside and beneath the facility, where newborns and hundreds of other patients have suffered for days without electricity and other basic necessities as fighting raged outside.Details from the raid remained sketchy, but officials from Israel and Gaza presented different accounts of what was happening at Shifa Hospital in Gaza City: The Israeli army released video showing soldiers carrying boxes labeled as “baby food” and “medical supplies,” while health officials talked of terrified staff and patients as troops moved through the buildings. After encircling Shifa for days, Israel faced pressure to prove its claim that Hamas had turned the hospital into a command center, using the patients, staff and civilians sheltering there to provide cover for its militants — part of Isr...

Connecticut students have choice of Satan or Bible club. Why it’s not really good against evil.

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 10:22:56 GMT

Elementary school children in the town of Lebanon will be able to join the After School Satan Club starting Dec. 1.According to June Everett of Colorado, campaign director for the clubs, the Satan Club was requested by a parent from Lebanon Elementary School as an alternative to the Good News Club that meets there. It’s sponsored by the Satanic Temple, an atheist group.Everett said it’s the first Satan Club in Connecticut.“This particular parent was aware of the Good News Club and did not feel comfortable sending her children to the Good News Club and was more closely aligned with our seven tenets and our beliefs,” she said.“So she reached out and asked if we can start an After School Satan Club at her kid’s elementary school, and so we went through the process and we lined up our volunteers to help with the club. And of course, the school district understands constitutional law and the First Amendment, so they approved us without any issues.”There’s nothing evil about the club, Eve...

Another loss would do the same — and knock the Ducks out of their pole position in the race for the No. 2 seed in the Pac-12 championship.Washington (7-0 in conference play) is the frontrunner and would clinch a berth with a victory in either of its last two games.Oregon (6-1) also controls its destiny: Win out, and the Ducks are in.Arizona (5-2) must sweep its final two ...
