Missouri climatologist: Heat causing high evaporation rates, no rainfall to replace it

Missouri climatologist: Heat causing high evaporation rates, no rainfall to replace it JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – It's a hot topic, literally. What does this heat mean for drought conditions across the state? While many parts of Missouri saw rainfall earlier this month and drought conditions are improving, it's this heat that could cause the state to take two steps backwards because the evaporation rate is that much higher."We're losing potentially two-tenths of an inch of rainfall that fell on those fields every day when it gets this hot," Missouri Department of Natural Resources Director Dru Buntin said. "It increases the loss of that moisture in the soil when you have these types of extreme heat."After the driest April and May since 1988 and now the heat, the agriculture industry continues to struggle. Farmers are left with tough decisions like sending cattle to market early due to a lack of feed. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now Daily News ...

St. Louis County man sentenced for killing man he caught sleeping with girlfriend ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. - A St. Louis County man will spend decades behind bars after killing a man he caught sleeping with his girlfriend several years ago. A judge has sentenced Edward Mosely, 51, to 25 years in prison for voluntary manslaughter and three years for armed criminal action in the case. A jury convicted Mosely of these crimes earlier this year. According to court documents obtained by FOX 2, on Dec. 16, 2019, Mosely shot and killed a man named Michael Moore in the 7300 block of Sapphire Avenue. Mosely told St. Louis County Police detectives that he killed Moore because he felt disrespected that Moore had slept with his girlfriend. St. Louis police won’t respond in person to car break-ins Investigators say the confession was the centerpiece of the state’s case, though the Mosely's attorneys asked for probation. Prosecutors argued that, by the defendant’s own admission in his confession, he shot Moore multiple times, including while he tried to run away. That statement...

Democrat Adam Frisch leads against GOP Rep. Lauren Boebert in poll for 2024 race

Democrat Adam Frisch leads against GOP Rep. Lauren Boebert in poll for 2024 race A new poll released Tuesday by Adam Frisch’s congressional campaign shows the former Aspen city councilman narrowly leading U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert in one of the most closely watched House races in the country — the first time the Democrat has held an edge over his GOP nemesis. The poll, conducted this month by Keating Research among 801 3rd Congressional District residents likely to vote next year, shows Frisch with a 50% to 48% lead. Because the poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5%, president and founder Chris Keating conceded that the results signify, for all intents and purposes, a tie.But the trajectory for Frisch, Keating said, is going the right way. In an October 2022 poll the firm conducted on last November’s race, it was Boebert who held the 2% lead. She ended up defeating Frisch by fewer than 600 votes — a margin so thin it triggered an automatic recount.“So we’re seeing a steady improvement in Adam’s numbers,” Keating said at a Tuesday morning press conferenc...

Shannon Road closed in Los Gatos: Uneven pavement poses ‘potential hazard’ Safety concerns pushed Los Gatos officials to reduce a portion of Shannon Road down to one lane of traffic last week, just months after a lawsuit alleging botched repairs to the road was settled. While the town’s Parks and Public Works department said the road in East Los Gatos is not in danger of  “catastrophic failure,” a review of the road’s pavement conditions showed some shifting occurred and the uneven pavement could create a “potential hazard” for travelers. The closed 1,300-foot stretch of road runs westbound between Santa Rosa Drive and Diduca Way, which heads into town. The road winds through the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains and climbs from 570 to 685 feet above sea level.Officials installed temporary traffic controls and signals on Aug. 11 for alternating one-way traffic flow along the closed portion of the road, which will remain in place until construction of the roadway starts later this year. The road was the subject of a $5.5 million lawsuit l...

Ron DeSantis’s Next Ideological Coup: “Judicial Gerrymander” in Florida

Published Tue, 19 Nov 2024 06:50:27 GMT

Ron DeSantis’s Next Ideological Coup: “Judicial Gerrymander” in Florida Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has been slowly taking over the mechanisms of governance in the state by swapping out officials he doesn’t like — even if they were elected by voters — and replacing them with people who will bend to his will.Lately, DeSantis has set his sights on the justice system. Earlier this month, he removed an elected prosecutor from office over a political disagreement — the second he has taken out. State Attorney for Orange-Osceola counties Monique Worrell, the governor claimed, hadn’t pursued the charges he wanted. A year earlier, he suspended former Hillsborough County State Attorney Andrew Warren, who had said he wouldn’t criminally charge people who sought abortion care under Florida’s latest abortion ban. Now, Florida is opening a new front in the battle between state politicians and elected stewards of the law, taking the first steps to launch what could become an ideological gerrymandering of the justice system. In Florida, 20 circuit courts serve two m...
