LAS VEGAS (AP) — At the inaugural Formula One Las Vegas Grand Prix, music and entertainment have taken a dominant role. As the elite motorsport experiments with the new race, A-list events are ubiquitous in Sin City, an unignorable part of the celebration. Here are some of the highlights.DAY TWO: TRACK DAMAGED BUT THE BEAT GOES ONOn Thursday, at a Sinatra-themed restaurant in the lobby of the Encore casino, Colombian reggaetonero J Balvin emerged in all black leather. He’d performed the day before at the Las Vegas Grand Prix opening ceremony — the only artist to perform a song not in English, his Usher-sampling “Dientes.” On Saturday, he’ll close the race weekend with a longer performance, making him the only musician to take the stage at this inaugural Formula One race twice. In many ways, it is fitting: F1 is a global sport, Balvin is a global artist, and music has become increasingly integrated with the sport.“No matter where you’re from, your language, people jus...Senegal’s highest court blocks detained opposition leader Ousmane Sonko from running for president

ANTANANARIVO, Madagascar (AP) — Madagascar’s incumbent President Andry Rajoelina held a commanding lead Friday as votes were counted in an election boycotted by the majority of candidates and marked by low turnout. Preliminary results released by the island nation’s elections management body, Céni, showed the 49-year-old former DJ with 71.26% of the votes cast on Thursday. That compared with his nearest rival Siteny Randrianasoloniaiko’s 10.67%. Former president Marc Ravalomanana was third with just under 10.08% of the vote. Ravalomanana is one of 10 candidates who boycotted the election, alleging that conditions for a legitimate and fair vote hadn’t been met, but their names remained on the ballot. Although less than 9% of polling stations had been counted by Friday midday, some pro-government media outlets in the country have already headlined an overwhelming victory for Rajoelina. “It’s done,” screamed a headline in the Madagascar Express.“Very likely victory in the first r...Highlands Ranch woman sentenced to 40 years for newborn murder

Officials are cautioning residents in Broward County after a pipe burst at a water treatment plant. The Southern Regional Wastewater treatment plant, located at 1621 N.14th Ave, had a 48-inch pipe that failed, which caused wastewater to be discharged around the plant, as well as the Echo Golf Course, located at 1451 Taft St., and West Lake. Due to the discharge of wastewater, officials are asking customers in Hollywood, Pembroke Pines, Dania Beach, Hallandale Beach, Miramar, Pembroke Park and southern Broward County to reduce their use of water until the proper repairs can be made. The less amount of water that is used, officials said, will aid in reducing backups and pressure on the system. Officials also said that the drinking water supply and people with onsite septic systems will be unaffected. According to the Department of Public Utilities, repairs have started on the pipe and they notified the appropriate agencies, which include the Florida State Warning Point and the Florida ...Gel-based cancer treatment developed by Mass General Brigham researchers shows promise

A new cancer treatment developed by researchers at Mass General Brigham is showing promise, using a gel to deliver cancer drugs for solid tumors. The gel, which requires only a single injection, has induced tumor regression and has improved survival in mice, according to an announcement this week from Mass General Brigham. Detailing their findings in a recent paper, researchers are targeting colon and breast cancers.Dr. Giovanni Traverso, an associate professor of mechanical engineering at MIT and a gastroenterologist at Brigham Women’s Hospital, recently spoke to 7NEWS, saying he is excited for what the new treatment could mean for patients. “It’s really transformative to try and help patients whose tumors are very resistant to therapy,” Traverso said. Traverso continued, saying cancer treatment has evolved “over the past decade plus” to use a patient’s immune system.“There are several wonderful drugs right now that can help harness the immune system to help cle...The flu is soaring in seven US states and rising in others, health officials say

Rather than reaching for an espresso martini next time you’re hankering for a caffeinated cocktail, consider mixing up a cozier, more complex alternative: the Chartreuse Cappuccino. This recipe comes from the pages of a new cookbook by the Portland-based all-things-coffee publication Sprudge, called “But First Coffee: A Guide to Brewing from the Kitchen to the Bar” by Sprudge cofounders Jordan Michelman and Zachary Carlsen. They credit this recipe to their friend, Paul Einbund, the San Francisco restaurateur behind the Morris and Maison Nico. Einbund combined his knowledge about coffee with a passion for Chartreuse — an herbal French liqueur made by monks at a single distillery in the French Alps — in this drink, which pairs well with Bay Area fog and cozy sweaters for sophisticated and atmospheric sipping.“Espresso is rude and milk is forgiving,” Einbund says in the cookbook. “When you add a little bit of sugar and Chartreuse into the mix, that’s when things get really interesting.”U...Where the Ravens turn after injury to TE Mark Andrews on controversial hip-drop tackle

There’s a new buzz around the NFL, and it grew louder in front of a prime-time national television audience Thursday night at M&T Bank Stadium.Ravens tight end Mark Andrews is likely out for the season after suffering an ankle injury in the first quarter of Baltimore’s 34-20 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. Linebacker Logan Wilson brought down the 2021 All-Pro and three-time Pro Bowl selection with a controversial hip-drop tackle, which is when a defender encircles a runner and drops his weight on the opponent’s knee or ankle to bring the player to the ground.“When they do it, the runner becomes defenseless,” Rich McKay, chairman of the NFL’s competition committee, said during league meetings in October, adding that the play is a “cousin” of the horse-collar tackle, which was made illegal in 2005. “They can’t kick their way out from under. And that’s the problem. That’s where the injury occurs. You see t...Latest news
