SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- San Francisco Mayor London Breed announced new legislation Monday that will make it easier to build new housing along commercial corridors and the Westside of the city. The tech-centric city is grappling with a large number of empty commercial buildings while tech workers continue working remotely and large retailers close up shop. At the same time, the city has sky-high rent prices, a housing stock shortage, a homeless crisis, and a public image problem. The Mayor's Office is trying to cut back red tape that blocked home builders for decades. By eliminating arbitrary residential density limits in mixed-use commercial districts, Breed said her proposal will create new housing in neighborhoods across the city."These arbitrary restrictions are hurting our ability to meet the housing needs of our city. Housing for All requires us to get to the heart of everything that is slowing and stopping housing in the city," Breed said. The legislation announced Monday is part...AP PHOTOS: Ukraine insists battle for Bakhmut is not over

Despite Russian claims to have captured the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, top military leaders in Ukraine insist the grinding nine-month battle there is not over.Although Ukraine now controls only a small part of the city, Kyiv says its troops played a key role in the strategy of exhausting Russian forces and will carry on fighting. Tens of thousands of soldiers on both sides have died.Satellite imagery shows infrastructure, apartment blocks and buildings reduced to rubble from relentless artillery attacks.A Russian state TV report from the smoldering city showed Russian fighters yelling “Victory!” and placing two flags — the Russian tricolor and the black flag of the private military contractor Wagner — atop a tall, partly destroyed building. The flags were mounted “so that everyone could see them,” the correspondent said, even though the bombed-out, deserted 400-year-old city looks like a ghost of itself after the longest and bloodiest battle of the war.For Ukraine, the important fact...Remark Holdings: Q1 Earnings Snapshot

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks drifted to a mixed finish Monday, as Wall Street waited for the results of a pivotal meeting meant to avoid a potentially disastrous default on the U.S. government’s debt. The S&P 500 was at a virtual standstill after flipping between small gains and losses through the day. It edged up by 0.65, or less than 0.1%, to 4,192.63. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 140.05 points, or 0.4%, to 33,286.58, and the Nasdaq composite rose 62.88, or 0.5%, to 12,720.78.The stock market is near its highest level since August, but it’s been mostly remaining within a tight range for weeks as several big worries weigh. The biggest near-term risk is the possibility of a U.S. default, something that could occur as soon as June 1.That’s when Washington could run out of cash to pay its bills, unless Congress allows it to borrow more. ___ What it would mean for the global economy if the US defaults on its debtWASHINGTON (AP) — If the debt crisis roiling Washington were eventually to send the United States crashing into recession, America’s economy would hardly sink alone. The repercussions of a first-ever default on the federal debt would quickly reverberate around the world. Orders for Chinese factories that sell electronics to the United States could dry up. Swiss investors who own U.S. Treasurys would suffer losses. Sri Lankan companies could no longer deploy dollars as an alternative to their own dodgy currency. Moody’s Analytics has concluded that even if the debt limit were breached for no more than week, the U.S. economy would weaken so much, so fast, as to wipe out 1.5 million jobs.___Meta fined record $1.3 billion and ordered to stop sending European user data to USLONDON (AP) — The European Union has slapped Meta with a record $1.3 billion privacy fine and ordered it to stop transferring users’ personal...How major US stock indexes fared Monday 5/22/2023

DENVER (KDVR) -- It makes very little difference how well the team performs - National Basketball Association fans have mainly negative views of coaches.Sports Gambling site Betway combed through millions of tweets to see which NBA coach is the most loved - or the least hated, at least. Nuggets could be headed to NBA Finals for 1st time ever Perhaps unsurprisingly, negative opinions online are far more common than positive ones. The league's most loved coach is the Indiana Pacers' Rick Carlisle, about whom 30.9% of tweets were positive - meaning over two-thirds were negative for even the most popular coach in the league. However, this comparatively positive assessment comes with a caveat - Carlisle only had 2,421 tweets about him in the past 12 months, the lowest amount of any coach in the comparison.Apparently, a winning record makes little difference in the public's perception of the coach. The Denver Nuggets could be headed to the NBA Finals for the first t...Latest news
