How invasive — or effective — will Berkeley’s new license plate readers be? BERKELEY — Can a city tackle spikes in violent property crimes, auto thefts and traffic violations without violating privacy rights and increasing police enforcement stops that might be racially biased?Berkeley officials say they can walk that line with the upcoming installation of 52 license plate readers along the city’s busy streets and bustling public corridors as part of a two-year pilot program to help the city’s understaffed police force investigate criminal activity. The technology — Automatic License Plate Readers, or ALPRs — captures images of license plates, then cross-references them with law enforcement crime databases. Police are alerted when plates match descriptions of vehicles involved in active crimes or connected to missing-person reports, according to police Sgt. Joe Ledoux. While similar readers currently are used in several Bay Area cities along freeways, bridges and many parking lots, the community was sharply divided during Tuesday’s Ber...

Broncos camp under Sean Payton has entirely different vibe from Nathaniel Hackett's 'Camp Cupcake' ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Judging by the vibe at Wednesday's “ramp-up” workout, the Denver Broncos are in for a much tougher training camp under new head coach Sean Payton than the infamous “Camp Cupcake” they took part in under Nathaniel Hackett a year ago.“We all saw it in the intensity and the sense of urgency from OTAs and minicamp and it just carried over into the practice that we just had,” wide receiver Courtland Sutton said. "... I was just talking to one of the guys in the weight room about how we do anything is how we do everything.”Players appear to have steeled themselves for a much more rigorous training camp and preseason slate than they had under Hackett, who was canned after just 11 months and four wins.“You can see it with their weights and the workouts we did yesterday, I think they're in good shape,” Payton said after the spirited 90-minute practice that officially kicked off his first training camp in Denver. It’s known as one of the most beautiful coins ever minted,” Barry said. Barry’s fascination started when he was young.“The first time I started collecting coins, I had a paper route. I was about 10,” Barry said. And he still loves collectibles, like the books and records he sells in his Newton store. “I’m an avid collector of everything,” Barry said. Barry recently bought this one-ounce gold coin for more than $2800 from the U.S. Mint.“I was very excited about it. Red Sox rally for five runs late to beat Braves 5-3, sweep series

Published Tue, 19 Nov 2024 08:45:00 GMT

Red Sox rally for five runs late to beat Braves 5-3, sweep series Wednesday night marked one of the best pitcher’s duels we’ve seen at Fenway Park this season, a heavyweight battle between 24-year-old phenoms Brayan Bello and Spencer Strider. But in the end, it was the Red Sox offense that stole the show.Unable to get anything going against Strider for much of the game, the Red Sox rallied for five unanswered runs late to beat the Atlanta Braves 5-3. Triston Casas led the way, going 2 for 2 with two walks and a solo home run, and Justin Turner delivered the exclamation point with the go-ahead two-run double to cap off a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh. The Red Sox flipped the script on a night where it looked like one small miscue might mean the difference between Bello and Strider. The young standouts, who came into the night as two of only five pitchers age 24 or under who have recorded at least 2.0 wins above replacement so far this season, more than lived up to the hype. Each mowed down their respective opposition, with S...
