Domestic workers demand labor protections at rally held in downtown Miami Domestic workers took to the streets of downtown Miami to demand their rights.Nannies, housekeepers and home health aides asked lawmakers for labor protections at a rally held Saturday.Demonstrators gathered outside of the Stephen P. Clark Government Center to send their message.“We are here mobilizing domestic workers to raise their voices, to link hands, to ensure that they have a right to a written contract, that they’re not experiencing wage theft, that they’re not experiencing abuse on the job,” said Santra Denis, executive director of the Miami Workers Center.South Florida is home to around 100,000 domestic workers, with 60,000 living in Miami-Dade County, according to the Miami Workers Center.

Thomas Park along Northwest Eighth Avenue.Miami Beach also welcomed the community on Saturday to celebrate and honor the contributions of African Americans at the Soul Vegan Festival, held at Lummus Park.The event featured plant-based soul food and Caribbean dishes, as well as entertainment for children.Juneteenth marks the day when the last population of enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned that they were free, back on June 19, 1865.

22nd Mayor’s Ball in Miami expected to raise over $1M for United Way South Florida leaders came to downtown Miami this weekend united for a cause.The 22nd Annual Mayor’s Ball, hosted by Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, was held at the JW Marriott Marquis Miami, Saturday night.The black tie event is expected to raise more than $1 million in support of United Way and its mission to build a stronger city through education, financial stability and health.“This event is very important, not just for United Way, but important for our community, because those dollars that are raised go right back into the community to help the people of our fierce city,” said Symeria Hudson, president of United Way of Miami.A familiar face 7News anchor Belkys Nerey, was in attendance, along with more than 700 of Miami-Dade’s most influential business, civic and community leaders.

1 dead, 1 injured in shooting at Juneteenth event in Liberty Station SAN DIEGO -- One person is dead following a shooting at a Juneteenth event in Liberty Station Saturday evening that left another injured, the San Diego Police Department confirmed.According to SDPD, authorities were alerted to the shooting at the center's NTC Park around 6:45 p.m. Authorities say there was a dispute between attendees at the Juneteenth event held in the park, prompting an individual to pull a gun.Two people were struck in the shooting, SDPD said. The second victim was escorted to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Their current condition is not known at this time.It is unknown if an arrest has been made in the shooting. A description of the possible shooter has not been disclosed by law enforcement.The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact SDPD or to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers.This is a developing story. FOX 5 has a crew headed to the scene. Check back for updates.
