Erik Johnson’s elimination-game-winning goal gives him a chance to accomplish the one thing missing from his Avalanche resume: Game 7 victory SEATTLE — A spoonful of his own medicine aided Erik Johnson on his way to the rink for the biggest game of the season.First-time teammate Evan Rodrigues has noticed that the Avalanche’s longest-tenured player has a “general aura” of levity. “No matter what the situation is,” Rodrigues said, “he’s always giving the room a laugh or keeping us upbeat.”So as Johnson strolled from the team bus into Climate Pledge Arena on Friday afternoon, backup goalie Pavel Francouz fittingly gave him an outrageous forecast that earned a toothless laugh from Johnson.“You’re going to get a hat trick tonight,” Francouz told the 35-year-old defenseman.Johnson didn’t score in 63 regular-season games. In fact, he led the NHL in most shots (98) without a goal.“I don’t know about that,” he told Francouz, “but thank you.”Francouz was mad at Johnson after Game 6 for only scoring once.Johnson of all Avs, o...

Pac-12 news recap: Key developments from the week include NFL Draft, Big Ten chatter and CU’s roster purge Recapping the week’s key stories across the conference …1. Three in the firstThe Pac-12 produced three first-round selections in the NFL Draft, the lowest total among Power Five conferences, and no top-10 picks. As expected, Oregon cornerback Christian Gonzalez was first off the board, heading to New England with the No. 17 selection. USC receiver Jordan Addison went No. 24 (Minnesota), and Utah tight end Dalton Kincaid was the 26th pick (Buffalo). In a sign of the times, each player started his college career elsewhere.Gonzalez signed with Colorado and played just one year in Eugene. Addison transferred from Pittsburgh to USC. And Kincaid attended the University of San Diego as a walk-on, then jumped to Utah.Although the conference experienced a ho-hum Day One, the Pac-12 footprint did exceedingly well: quarterbacks Bryce Young (Pasadena), CJ Stroud (Rancho Cucamonga) and tailback Bijan Robinson (Tucson) were all top-10 picks.Their decisions to sign elsewhere in the winte...

Brighton routs Wolves 6-0 to revive European ambitions BRIGHTON, England (AP) — Brighton finished a difficult week on a stylish high by thrashing Wolverhampton 6-0 in the Premier League on Saturday to revive its hopes of qualifying for a European competition next season.Deniz Undav, Danny Welbeck and Pascal Gross all scored twice as Brighton shrugged off a penalty-shootout loss to Manchester United in the FA Cup semifinals at Wembley Stadium last weekend and another defeat on Wednesday at Nottingham Forest in the league.Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi made five changes — including resting star midfielders Moises Caicedo, Kaoru Mitoma and World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister — after his team’s tired-looking display at Forest and the injection of freshness paid off.Brighton stayed in eighth place but moved two points behind Tottenham in fifth, and has two games in hand. Finishing fifth or sixth would secure a Europa League qualification place.Wolves had won three of their last four games, all without conceding, to go a long way to...
