Former Mets J.D. Davis, Michael Conforto wonder what could have been in New York SAN FRANCISCO — By last year’s trade deadline, the excitement that Michael Conforto and J.D. Davis felt during their ascendent 2019 felt like eons ago. Once part of a promising young core in New York, Conforto’s shoulder rehab had kept him off the field all season, and Davis’ patience was wearing thin as he struggled to see the field consistently despite a clean bill of health.“Football players and basketball players, they can go in and just say, I want to get traded,” Davis said. “As a baseball player, you can’t. You’re more under the organization’s thumb and you just have to do what you’ve got to do. … I was very outspoken in saying I just need more reps.”Davis had voiced his displeasure. He’d heard murmurs leading up to deadline day. So when his phone rang in the visitor’s clubhouse at Nationals Park last August, Davis wasn’t surprised to hear the voice of Mets general manager Billy Eppler on the other end. Where h...

Nets’ Mikal Bridges: ‘I let my team down’ after poor shooting series Mikal Bridges’ deep sigh pierced through the deafening silence wafting about the home locker room as he walked from his locker to the bathroom. He blew it — and he knew it.“I love my guys to death and I told them, that’s on me, I’m sorry I couldn’t come through and just win some games,” he said. “I just wanted to make some shots but I promised them I’ll be better next time.”The Nets thrust Bridges into the No. 1 scoring option role when they acquired him in the deal that sent Kevin Durant to the Phoenix Suns. After averaging 27 points per game in Brooklyn in the second half of the regular season, the Sixers slowed him down.Bridges shot 43 percent from the field in his four-game playoff series. His only efficient basketball came in the first half of Game 1 before Sixers head coach Doc Rivers game planned against him as the lead scorer.Bridges shot 10-of-16 from the field in the first half of that game. Anthony Volpe’s 2-run homer, DJ LeMahieu’s walk-off single lead Yankees to 3-2 win over the Blue Jays Saturday’s pitching duel between the Yankees’ Gerrit Cole and the Blue Jays’ Alek Manoah lived up to the hype. But after both starters departed, Anthony Volpe and DJ LeMahieu stole the spotlight.Volpe, a 21-year-old rookie, scored the first runs of the game in the eighth inning when he took a Yimi Garcia fastball the other way and over the right field fence at Yankee Stadium. The two-run home run, the second of Volpe’s young career, gave the Yankees a 2-0 lead after Manoah spent most of the afternoon shoving.A curtain call soon followed, though Aaron Boone and bench coach Carlos Mendoza had to prod the reluctant shortstop, who ultimately clapped at the crowd instead of offering a traditional wave or tip of the helmet.“It was pretty crazy. I didn’t really know what was going on, I guess, and I didn’t want to assume to go out or anything like that,” Volpe said with a smile. “I didn’t even know where to go.”Boone said the...

Natick residents to gather Sunday after swastika found near local MBTA stop A rabbi at the Chabad Center of Natick is calling on residents in his town to come together Sunday to find peace after police identified a swastika spray painted near the West Natick MBTA station late Thursday.Rabbi Levi Fogelman is asking residents to gather at 10:30 a.m. at Boden Lane Bridge, near where the swastika appeared. The group will then march to the Chabad Center at 10:45 a.m. for a celebration.“The best way to stop darkness is to double our efforts with light and goodness,” Fogelman wrote in a Facebook post Friday. “We take control of our response with acts of positivity and pride. When negativity sees that all they accomplished was to strengthen us even more, it will lose.”The Natick Police Department is investigating the incident and has increased presence in the area of the commuter rail stop, Fogelman said. One resident took quick action by covering the image up with chalk, writing “Hate has no place here.”Anti-Semitic reported incidents have been on the rise across M...

Dighton-Rehoboth softball ends tough week at 2-2 DIGHTON — If ever there was a must-win game in April, Saturday was it for the Dighton-Rehoboth softball team. After a win over Bourne, vacation week was shaping up as a potential disaster for the Falcons with consecutive lopsided losses to South Coast Conference wagons Case and Apponequet. Falcons’ head coach Katie Holmes didn’t want to see her squad lose three in a row and give up ground in the SCC.The Falcons have been stinging the ball so far this spring, then registered a satisfying 3-2 win Saturday over non-league opponent Bishop Feehan using some timely hitting and solid pitching from Hannah Carey and Kylie Hillier. Morgan Corey continued her torrid hitting with a single, double and an RBI for Dighton-Rehoboth while Caleigh Cloonan and Emma Horrocks both knocked in runs for the 6-3 Falcons. The win evened Dighton-Rehoboth’s record to 2-2 for the week and a shot of momentum going forward.“It was a tough schedule for us this week but to end it this way I th...
