Judge upholds Missouri law used by AG to challenge school mask rules

Judge upholds Missouri law used by AG to challenge school mask rules A Cole County judge on Friday rejected a challenge to a 2021 law used by Missouri’s attorney general to sue school districts over COVID-19 mask policies. In a case that focused on whether lawmakers had put too much into the bill, rendering it unconstitutional, Judge Daniel Green decided that everything fit under the broad category of local government. The city of Overland in St. Louis County sued after the bill was passed, arguing that a provision barring it from collecting fees to use right-of-way based on the linear distance unconstitutionally deprived it of revenue. The law was also unconstitutional, lawyers for Overland argued during a December trial, because it violated the “single subject rule” and because it was a “special law” singling out a particular group.Green delayed ruling in Overland’s lawsuit until the Missouri Supreme Court reviewed one of his previous cases where he upheld a law preempting local ordinances regulating large farming operations. The court uphe...

What is a sweeper? A look at the pitch taking over MLB

What is a sweeper? A look at the pitch taking over MLB By DAVID BRANDT (AP Baseball Writer)PHOENIX (AP) — Bob Melvin was talking about the improvement of Padres reliever Steven Wilson, when the San Diego skipper dropped in some cool-kid lingo that’s making the rounds in Major League Baseball these days.“The sweeper’s ended up being a really big pitch for him,” Melvin said.A few seconds later, Melvin was asked a simple question: What exactly is a sweeper?Busted.“I don’t know,” Melvin said, laughing. “It’s new-age baseball talk. A slider’s probably got a little more depth and the sweeper probably comes across a little more. I’ve made that joke, too. I still write it down as a slider.”Move over slider, curve, slurve and screwball, there’s a new (ish) breaking ball that’s all the rage in MLB: the sweeper. Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani uses it, as do Padres starter Yu Darvish, Yankees lefty Nestor Cortes and dozens of other pitchers. To be truthful, it&...

Broncos Mock Draft 2.0: Exploring a world in which Denver trades both up and down In the days leading into the NFL draft, most of the heavy lifting in terms of scouting and building a draft board is completed. The last sets of decisions, however, can be the ones that make or break draft classes. Broncos general manager George Paton, coach Sean Payton and their staffs have spent the past several days working through “clusters” of players they see as having similar value. Included is a list of players Denver would consider trading up for.“It’s easy to obtain draft capital, generally speaking,” Payton said last week. “If you want to move back, you can. Or forward, you can. If you choose to move forward, it’s because there is someone you really like. If you chose to move back, there is a feeling that maybe the player we would select at the current slot, we can select a few picks later.“If the value is right relative to a trade, you can always acquire picks.”Players slide up and down the board regularly as teams work through their process, but in the bigger, public pic...
