Tuesday marks the final day for residents of the Majestic Isle Condominium to move out after the building was deemed unsafe. The move has left 55 residents questioning what comes next.Early Tuesday morning saw U-Haul trucks coming in and out of the building as movers helped residents pack their belongings. Officials had given the residents until 10 a.m. to clear out of the building. The decision to force residents out came after an engineering report highlighted the building’s poor condition. Concerns about sagging floors and termite damage have led to fears over the safety of the residents. On Monday, officials met with the residents to discuss how to help renters and owners of the condominium. The meeting was emotional for many, and some were concerned about where they would stay in the short term.More than half of the residents have found alternative accommodation while the condo undergoes safety construction. However, some residents still require shelter, and the meeting end...

(CNN) — He famously played a motel co-owner in “Schitt’s Creek” and has been able to travel all over the world throughout his acting career, which spans five decades. But Canadian star Eugene Levy freely admits that he’s “not fond of traveling” at all, describing himself as more of “the great indoors type of guy.”“I don’t hate it. [Hate] is a very strong word,” Levy tells CNN Travel. “But I don’t really love it.”The Emmy winner is continually forced out of his comfort zone in his latest TV project “The Reluctant Traveler,” an eight-episode Apple TV+ travel series that follows Levy as he hesitantly travels to places like Finland, Costa Rica, South Africa and Tokyo.Famous for his deadpan delivery, Levy makes no attempt to even pretend that he’s getting any enjoyment out of many of the experiences, which involve going dog-sledding, visiting the rainforest and even taking a stool s...

(CNN) — To quote one of my favorite DJ Khaled songs, “All I do is win, win, win no matter what.”In all honesty, I don’t stay winning. I have, however, been on a pretty good streak lately, like when I recently had the opportunity to speak with one of the legendary heavyweight champions of the world. Depending upon your age, you either know George Foreman for his prowess in the boxing ring or his famed kitchen grills.Either way, the now 74-year-old Olympic gold medalist and two-time world heavyweight champion is sharing more about his life in the new biopic, “Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World.”The film details how Foreman rose from poverty to become a superstar boxer — a rival to Muhammad Ali — as well as a minister and an entrepreneur, and later in life, how he made his return to the ring when many didn’t think he had it in him.Foreman told me he wasn’t always c...

French democracy is in crisis. What else is new?

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 02:12:22 GMT

Revolution is in the air.  After three months of turmoil over President Emmanuel Macron’s flagship pensions reform, France is tempted once again to rip up its constitution and start afresh. Will 2023 go down — after 1789, 1830, 1848, 1870, 1940 and 1958 — as the year which forced radical change in the method of government of perhaps the least-governable large country in the Western world?Reputable French historians and political commentators are talking of a “democratic crisis” or a “crise de régime.” The pensions dispute has, they say, transcended arguments over whether the French should retire at 62 or 64. The French president’s deployment of a full armory of special constitutional powers to impose a reform rejected by 70 percent of French adults has created — or accelerated — a deeper, political malaise. In the age of the internet and contempt for les élites, the top-down, elected monarchy devised by Charles de Gaulle 65 years ago is no longer workable, the commenta...

Dave Hyde: ‘The Big One’ era continues as Jimmy Butler makes history in Heat’s win

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 02:12:22 GMT

Here’s the thing about history: It’s hard to see coming. Monday night’s drama began, undramatically enough, with Jimmy Butler making a pedestrian 20-foot shot with just over five minutes left in a troubled game.“Frustrating,’ Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra called Game 4 against Milwaukee to that point. “Things weren’t going our way.”No one considered Butler’s shot was the start of anything, much less the start of something unbelievable that would put the Heat up 3-1 this series. How could they? That shot merely brought the Miami merely brought within what seemed like a constant eight-point cushion for Milwaukee. It really just set up the next shot, which was a Butler drive and five-foot runner.Which was followed by his two free throws and we were getting somewhere. Then came a breakaway dunk to put the Heat in the lead, and the hinges started coming off the night in a way they do in any momentous game.“That was the moment fo...
