Of the 1,600-plus tornadoes that happen around the world each year, the vast majority occur in the United States.A large part of the central U.S.—dubbed Tornado Alley—has become famous for its high number of annual tornadoes; however, even though it has been enshrined in films like "The Wizard of Oz" and "Twister," the storms can happen anywhere. The Southeast experiences tornadoes at a similar frequency, and even seemingly unlikely states like Hawaii have experienced them.Meteorologists use the Enhanced Fujita scale to classify tornadoes' severity. The storms are ranked on a scale of EF0 to EF5 based on wind speed and related damage, with EF5 storms having wind speeds above 200 mph. Most tornadoes in the U.S. have wind speeds below 110 mph—making them primarily EF0 and EF1 storms. Still, even smaller-scale storms can cause significant damage. EF0 and EF1 storms have contributed to more than $900 million in property damage since 2012, averaging $75,000 per storm. EF1 tornadoes are a...The most popular dog names of 2023 in Missouri

By MIKE SCHNEIDER (Associated Press)ORLANDO, Fla. — The NAACP over the weekend issued a travel advisory for Florida, joining two other civil rights groups in warning potential tourists that recent laws and policies championed by Gov. Ron DeSantis and Florida lawmakers are “openly hostile toward African Americans, people of color and LGBTQ+ individuals.”The NAACP, long an advocate for Black Americans, joined the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), a Latino civil rights organization, and Equality Florida, a gay rights advocacy group, in issuing travel advisories for the Sunshine State, where tourism is one of the state’s largest job sectors. The warning approved Saturday by the NAACP’s board of directors tells tourists that, before traveling to Florida, they should understand the state of Florida “devalues and marginalizes the contributions of, and the challenges faced by African Americans and other communities of color.” An email was sent Sunday morning to DeSantis...Texas vs. California: Which drivers are worse?

Like it or not, there's (sometimes) a friendly rivalry between Texas and California. Our most populous states are often compared on cost of living, quality of life, economic supremacy and politics, to name a few. But these giants of American culture have a few things in common, including independent-minded residents with a reputation for driving like they own the road. So which drivers are actually worse? A study released this month by Forbes Advisor leaves little doubt, ranking Texans as the worst drivers in the nation. Their research team used six metrics, including per-person drunken-driving deaths, distracted- and drowsy-driving deaths, wrong-way fatal accidents, and fatal crashes while failing to obey traffic signals. The final factor was phone use per mile behind the wheel. "Texas ranks second worst in the nation for two of the metrics we considered: fatal car accidents involving a drowsy driver (1.35 accidents per 100,000 licensed drivers) and fatal car accidents involving a ...Fast X Takes the Scenic Route with Franchise Finale

Fas(ten) your seat belts, it’s going to be a bumpier than ever ride. The first part of Fast X, the Fast and Furious finale film, is like The Avengers on steroids: every character gets a moment, every movie gets a callback and every scene has to comment on something that happened in a previous film. Trying to keep up with all these moving pieces is like trying to memorize a car manual, only with twice as many parts. After nine films, four directors and hundreds of actors, the series which started with Vin Diesel racing on the streets of Los Angeles has turned into a giant, globe-trotting adventure. And somehow all this nonsense is still a fun escape. The Fast and Furious films have had their ups and downs, so it’s nice to see the finale tying everything together. Though no expense has been spared on production, the new movie excels by staying true to the action, muscle and melodrama that made this series a hit. Moreover, it succeeds because the franchise has grounded its s...Police evacuate part of terminal at San Francisco International Airport
