Read more Letters to the Editor.Indigenous practicescan save the landI applaud the indigenous tribes who are able to get treatment as a state designation under the Clean Water Act. However, the inconsistency with which government offices support or oppose indigenous land stewardship efforts, with the changing of political administrations, concerns me.Indigenous cultures’ land stewardship practices are rarely implemented by non-indigenous land owners as they require significant care and attention and may take generations to become “profitable” as ecosystem services. Recognizing indigenous communities’ sovereignty and rights to determine the ecosystem health requirements is a good start, but Western cultures are not yet recognizing the rights of nature itself and our responsibilities to act in reciprocity toward it for our children’s sake. While we can’t control the weather, we can absolutely control our farming practice...

Short-handed Broncos try to snap 16-game skid to Chiefs and hand Mahomes 1st road loss in AFC West DENVER (AP) — If the Denver Broncos finally figure out how to beat Patrick Mahomes and end their 16-game losing streak to the Kansas City Chiefs, don’t expect Sean Payton to be the life of the party. He was suprisingly surly after the Broncos held off the Green Bay Packers 19-17 last weekend for his first home win and snapped a streak in which they’d lost an NFL record 10 consecutive games when leading at halftime.Three of those blown leads came this season under Payton, who took exception when asked about it during an oddly combative postgame news conference.Mistakenly thinking a reporter said “your team” when he actually said “this team,” Payton retorted, “MY team hasn’t lost 10 straight,” then admonished the reporter to rephrase his question accordingly. Payton dismissed the redirected question about the Broncos “getting over the hump.”“It wasn’t OUR hump — it wasn’t OUR hump,” retorted Payton. “I’m saying that respectfully — it wasn’t our...

Police in Texas could arrest migrants under a bill that is moving closer to approval by the governor AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas is closer to giving police broad new authority to arrest migrants and order them to leave the U.S. under a bill the state House advanced Thursday, putting Republican Gov. Greg Abbott on the path toward a potential new confrontation with the Biden administration over immigration. Tempers flared over the proposal in the Texas Capitol, where Hispanic Democratic lawmakers led hours of emotional protests over issues of race and the legality of the plan before House Republicans passed the bill on a party-line vote before sunrise.A similar proposal has already cleared the Texas Senate, meaning Republicans must now agree on a version before sending it to Abbott’s desk. “Our cries for help in the enforcement of existing federal immigration laws have been ignored by President Biden. We have had enough,” said Republican state Rep. David Spiller, author of the House bill. Two years into Texas pushing the boundaries of immigration enforcement — busing migra...
