SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazil’s government issued a provisional decree on Tuesday to authorize sports betting and tax companies’ revenues by 18%. The move comes amid a sprawling investigation that ensnared dozens of players in a match-fixing scandal.President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s decree was sent to congress, which needs to vote on it on the next 120 days so it remains valid. Brazil’s finance ministry expects to collect at least 2 billion Brazilian reals ($420 million) in tax from betting companies next year if the provisional measure is confirmed.Brazilian bettors will not pay tax if they make gains amounting to almost $445 on each bet. Any gains above that will make betters pay 30% income tax. The decree comes less than one year after an investigation by the attorney’s office in Goias showed that some players had been offered between $10,000 and $20,000 to perform specific actions, like receiving yellow cards and giving away penalty kicks. He has gone three days without a migraine and was able to do some baserunning work on the field at Yankee Stadium before the start of Tuesday’s Subway Series game against the Yankees. The right fielder will be eligible to come off the injured list Thursday, but the Mets aren’t yet ready to say they’ll activate him on that date.“We’re not ready to make that commitment yet,” manager Buck Showalter said Tuesday at Yankee Stadium. “He’s had a good three days. He needed it.”The Mets have sent Marte to specialists to try to figure out why the migraines were occurring so close together. As triple digit heat blankets parts of Southern California, some residents in a Riverside neighborhood have been without power since last night and are hoping service will be restored soon. For resident Shane Savage, one small fan is single handedly keeping his family’s home relatively cool in the heatwave. “We have an inverter in the car that’s here and we plugged that into the cigarette lighter and that’s at least powering the fan that we have there,” Savage told KTLA. The Riverside homeowner said he’s had to get creative after his power unexpectedly went out last night around 8 p.m., right after he and his wife had just returned home from Costco with a full load of groceries. “We didn’t get anything from Edison until later in the evening,” he explained. “We’ve gotten updates every so many hours that it’ll be up and running in two more hours, two more hours, two more hours.” Some 20 hours later and the power had yet to be restored, making it even more ...Latest news
