COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Norway took over the Arctic Council’s rotating presidency from Russia on Thursday amid concerns that the work of the eight-country intergovernmental body on protecting the sensitive environment is at risk because of suspension of cooperation with Moscow over the war in Ukraine. In March 2022, seven western members of the Arctic Council which doesn’t deal with security issues but makes binding agreements on environmental protection and gives a voice to the Indigenous peoples of the Arctic region, suspended their participation in the intergovernmental body in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine a month earlier. The countries — Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and the United States — said that they wouldn’t send representatives to the council’s meetings in Russia — the world’s largest Arctic state — although they remained convinced of the value of Arctic cooperation.Research involving Russia, ranging from climate work to mappin...Timeline: Extradition of prime suspect in Natalee Holloway disappearance

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Astronomers have created a stunning mosaic of baby star clusters hiding in our galactic backyard. The montage, published Thursday, reveals five vast stellar nurseries less than 1,500 light-years away. A light-year is nearly 6 trillion miles (9.7 trillion kilometers). To come up with their atlas, scientists pieced together more than 1 million images taken over five years by the European Southern Observatory in Chile. The observatory’s infrared survey telescope was able to peer through clouds of dust and discern infant stars.“We can detect even the faintest sources of light, like stars far less massive than the sun, revealing objects that no one has ever seen before,” University of Vienna’s Stefan Meingast, the lead author, said in a statement. The observations, conducted from 2017 to 2022, will help researchers better understand how stars evolve from dust, Meingast said. The findings, appearing in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics, complemen...Broncos single-game tickets on sale after schedule announcement

(CNN) — Beyoncé kicked off her hotly anticipated “Renaissance” world tour in Sweden on Wednesday night — and, true to form, it was a night of numerous outfit changes. It was also a night of (nearly as many) custom bodysuits. There was a silvery Courrèges one with an iridescent circular cutout at its center; a sparkling Alexander McQueen one that flared elegantly at the hips; and a Balmain one embroidered with an intricate web of pearls. But the bodysuit that truly set the internet alight came courtesy of Spanish label Loewe.Bejeweled with gold crystal appliqué, the sparkling one-piece featured a series of strategically placed hand motifs, each decorated with long red nails. Two of the “hands” reached up the star’s legs, two covered more intimate body parts and two rested on her posterior (as revealed when the singer turned her back to the audience during a rendition of “Drunk in Love”). PARIS — France will next week propose financial support to incentivize citizens to buy European-made electric cars by year’s end, President Emmanuel Macron announced Thursday, signaling his first concrete step toward rebutting Washington’s own “Buy American” subsidies.“We will be the first European country to reform the criteria for the allocation of the car bonus,” Macron said during a speech on re-industrialization at the Elysée Palace. “Basically, we will support batteries and vehicles that are produced in Europe because their carbon footprint is good,” he added, calling the measure “a small revolution.”New measures will be included in an upcoming “green industry bill,” which is set to be adopted during a Cabinet meeting next Tuesday, before being discussed by French lawmakers. “This doesn’t mean that we are protectionist, we are not going to close the market, but we don’t want to use the Fr...‘Underground explosion’ shatters windows, leaves crater in road and manhole covering embedded in building’s roof in Somerville

Published Tue, 19 Nov 2024 12:39:47 GMT
State officials on Thursday offered a first glimpse into efforts to redetermine MassHealth members’ eligibility. About six weeks into the process, which is expected to take a year, about 70,000 Massachusetts households have so far begun the process of assessing whether they still qualify for state-funded health insurance. Hundreds of thousands people are expected to lose MassHealth coverage over the next year as federal coverage requirements in place since March 2020 expired on March 31, and the state redetermines eligibility for the first time since the pandemic began. Budget writers on Beacon Hill have factored into their spending plans massive savings associated with lower MassHealth rolls. About 50 percent of MassHealth members will be automatically renewed. The other half of the 2.3 million people enrolled in the program will be receiving a blue envelope containing forms to fill out with their current information, which MassHealth will use to determine if they still quali...New T Board Members Exploring Agency’s Challenges

Gov. Maura Healey’s recently tapped MBTA directors peppered agency officials with questions Thursday about budget woes and safety initiatives as they strive to restore trust in the beleaguered transit agency. Board member Tom McGee, a former senator and former mayor of Lynn, requested data spanning the last two decades on the agency’s sales tax trends, one-time funding needs and other challenges to offer a “historic perspective” into the budget shortfalls plaguing the agency, whose safety failures have been chronicled by federal investigators. McGee forecasted a “pretty sobering several years ahead.” “I know we all want to make sure we’re taking it on in the right way,” McGee said during a virtual MBTA Board of Directors Audit and Finance Subcommittee meeting Thursday morning. Confronting a $366 million budget gap in fiscal 2024, the MBTA plans to pull $261 million from its deficiency fund reserve, which is $9 million less than a...Latest news
