Editorial: BLM rule puts conservation on equal footing with oil and gas on public lands

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 04:27:47 GMT

The Bureau of Land Management is responsible for more public lands than any other agency in America, and yet, the bureaucracy has few tools to protect and conserve the land for future generations. In many ways, it makes sense that BLM’s mission for generations has been to make sure public lands are utilized for “multiple uses” especially public recreation. Public comment on the rule is open until June 20 on BLM’s website.Already the rule has met opposition from groups opposed to the idea of conservation getting equal footing with other poten...

I was sitting at a picnic table by a crackling fire pit at the Midtown Yacht Club, one of the Bend area’s lively neighborhood “tap yards.” There aren’t any yachts here, but there’s a lively food truck scene and a busy taphouse full of locals. As I enjoyed a plate of Middle Eastern food truck fare, sipped an IPA and surveyed the backyard party scene, I realized nearly everyone around me — adults, kids and even a couple of pooches— was clad in plaid.
