Meteorologists say we can expect mostly clear skies across the Southland Friday through Sunday with high temperatures in the upper 50s to mid-60s before more precipitation arrives.“There is increasing confidence that another strong Pacific storm system will move into the forecast area Monday night and Tuesday with rain and mountain snow spreading across the area,” the National Weather Service in Los Angeles said. Early estimates show rainfall of .50 to two inches across metro L.A. Monday night into Thursday, with the highest amounts on south-facing slopes and the northwest Santa Lucia Mountains, NWS said. There is also the potential for six to 12 inches of snow in the mountains above 4,000 feet.Gusty southerly winds should affect the area Tuesday into Thursday night as well, NWS said.Much of West Coast faces ban to fish salmon amid low stocks

SAN DIEGO (AP) — As drought dried up rivers that carry California’s newly hatched Chinook salmon to the ocean, state officials in recent years resorted to loading up the fish by the millions onto trucks and barges to take them to the Pacific. The surreal and desperate scramble boosted the survival rate of the hatchery-raised fish, but still it was not enough to reverse the declining stocks in the face of added challenges. River water temperatures rose with warm weather, and a Trump-era rollback of federal protections for waterways allowed more water to be diverted to farms. Climate change, meanwhile, threatens food sources for the young Chinook maturing in the Pacific. Now, ocean salmon fishing season is set to be prohibited this year off California and much of Oregon for the second time in 15 years after adult fall-run Chinook, often known as king salmon, returned to California's rivers in near record-low numbers in 2022.“There will be no wild-caught California salmon to eat unless ...Everett Molino Killed in Pedestrian Collision on 10 Freeway [San Bernardino, CA]

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Parents cannot be required to pull their children from private schools in New York that fail to meet state-designated standards, a judge decided, striking down a key provision of rules recently passed to strengthen oversight of such schools, including those specializing in religious education. The ruling in a state trial court in Albany came in response to a lawsuit brought by ultra-Orthodox schools, called yeshivas, and related advocacy groups over education rules enacted last fall. Under the rules, the state’s 1,800 private and religious schools must provide an education that is “substantially equivalent” to that of a public school. Opponents in the ultra-Orthodox community say the rules improperly target yeshivas, some of which focus intently on religious instruction with far less teaching in secular subjects such as English, math and science.Judge Christina Ryba on Thursday rejected an argument that the state regulations were unconstitutional. But she said st...Trevor Bauer, shunned by MLB, introduced by Japanese team

YOKOHAMA, Japan (AP) — The Trevor Bauer era in Japan began Friday at an introductory news conference, where he pulled a blue and white Yokohama DeNA BayStars jersey over a white shirt and red tie. The 2020 Cy Young Award winner is in Japan on a one-year deal that could let him prove himself and return to Major League Baseball, where he was unable to find work this season even after an arbitrator reduced his unprecedented 324-game suspension for violating the league’s domestic violence and sexual assault policy. He was cut in January by the Los Angeles Dodgers, who still owe him $22.5 million this season. Not a single Japanese reporter asked him about his suspension in the United States or the circumstances surrounding it.The only question about it came from The Associated Press. Bauer disputed the fact the question suggested he was suspended from the major leagues.“I don’t believe that’s accurate,” he said of the suspension. “But I’m excited to be here.
