More rain will be arriving in Southern California as residents prepare for New Year’s weekend.Beginning Friday night, light to moderate rainfall is expected to last through late Saturday night, according to the National Weather Service.“For the cold front, you can see the storm hitting San Francisco before moving into Los Angeles County overnight,” explained KTLA meteorologist Kaj Goldberg. “By about 6 a.m. Saturday, we’ll see the mid-morning hours picking up some rainfall for Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties.”Chances of thunderstorms will be active from late Friday through Saturday evening. It was Celeste Glazer’s athletic daughter Bridget who saved her from a potential watery grave in Capitola this week, but it was 21st century technology that saved the San Jose biotechnology executive’s phone.Glazer and seven family members had evacuated Thursday morning from Capitola as massive waves began to surge over a low seawall in front of their rented oceanside apartment. She and Bridget went back a couple hours later to retrieve a suitcase and return a parking permit, just as an abnormally high tide was pushing 20-foot swells into the town.In front of their unit, with seawater flowing rapidly over the pavement, Glazer fell in, and was pulled for nearly 15 feet until her daughter, a 15-year-old gymnast and freshman at Prospect High School in San Jose, grabbed her as she was about to be swept over the seawall into the raging ocean.Glazer’s life was safe, but while she had been fighting to stay ashore, she had let go of her new iPhone 14, issued by the San Jos...

Wayne served as co-pilot as long-time animal rescue volunteer Kim Purcell handled the controls in her V-tail bonanza. The crew ran into Dan Sauvageau – a pilot who was loading up several large puppies into his Cessna to fly them to new homes in the Reno area. The Flying Tails crew picked up eleven crates of cats to head back to the Bay Area. There were too many animals there for the shelter, and without Flying Tails’ rescue, they’d be put down.Purcell and Wayne got back into the bonanza, heading to Napa to ...

Council in March was meant to boost benefits by 10% between January and September. The nearly $40 million of funding for that increase comes from the city’s excess revenue, but now, Mayor Muriel Bowser is second-guessing where she wants that money to go.“Should we advance a nine month benefit that goes away? Or should we work on something that’s more sustainable for more people? That’s the question I put to the Council,” Bowser told NBC4.Bowser’s administration cited budgetary and staffing constraints in their push back.Ward 4 Councilmember Janeese Lewis George, who introduced the bill, released a statement en...
