Bats quiet as Twins drop series finale to Guardians CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Guardians started their day at the plate by ambushing Twins pitcher Joe Ryan, three of the first four hitters reaching base with singles. In those first at-bats, they did something that the Twins  couldn’t do all series: score a run that did not come via home run.On Sunday, the Twins didn’t even do that. Their franchise-record 18-day home-run streak came to an end in a 2-0 loss in the series finale to the Guardians at Progressive Field. The Twins did not get their first hit until the seventh inning against Cleveland starter Cal Quantrill, who had retired 16 straight batters before Alex Kirilloff sent his first hit of the season out to right field. Quantrill encountered little challenge all day against a Twins lineup that finished the series having scored just five runs.Their best opportunity against the right-hander came in the second inning when he hit Byron Buxton with a pitch to lead off the inning before walking Kirilloff and Joey Gallo. But the Twins’ wo...

150 years later, Illinois bridge tragedy among nation's worst DIXON, Ill. (AP) — Gertie Wadsworth was in the arms of her grandmother that bright day when sunshine dissolved distasteful memories of a long, brutal winter. Christan Goble held the 3 1/2-year-old girl in a crowd of more than 200 on the bridge over the Rock River. After a procession down Galena Avenue from the Baptist Church on May 4, 1873, the Rev. J.H. Pratt began baptizing parishioners in the brisk, rapid current. Then, with a sharp crack and a crescendo of shrieking spectators loaded on the pedestrian walkway in front of towering trusses, the 4-year-old bridge twisted, splintered and rolled over. Forty-six people perished, many immured by the unrelenting gridiron just below the water's surface. Along with 56 injuries, the Truesdell bridge tragedy, 150 years ago Thursday, remains the worst vehicular-bridge disaster in American history.“It's not as though the bridge just collapsed and went straight down,” says Tom Wadsworth, 70, a retired magazine editor and expert on the calamity....
