COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith, who has spent the past 18 years at Ohio State leading one of the largest and most successful athletic programs in the country, announced Wednesday he will retire at the end of June next year.“I’ve always believed that a leader seeks to be the right person at the right time in the life of an institution,” Smith, 67, said at a news conference Wednesday. “I just think July of 2024 is the right time to welcome in new leadership to build on what we’ve already achieved.”The search for his successor will begin after the university selects a new president in November. TOOELE COUNTY, Utah (KTVX/KUCW) – A Utah resident saved a paralyzed woman's life in a near-drowning after she rolled into a lake while belted into her wheelchair. Tooele resident Kelly Roundtree was playing darts with his daughter on the balcony of his lakeside home on Aug. 1 when he heard calls for help coming from the other side of Stansbury Lake. At first, Roundtree said he thought it might be children playing, but after another cry — this time one of panic — he knew something was wrong. VIDEO: Utah dog owner recounts ‘hawk attack’ He then saw something black in the water and a woman on the phone across the lake. She was talking to emergency responders. Within seconds, Roundtree was out the door and in his car. Officials say he left "without hesitation" and drove the few blocks around the lake. But how are those names chosen, and what happens if one is retired?The NHC maintains six lists of names that are used in rotation and recycled every six years. FAWN'S LEAP, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Greene County Sheriff's Office is investigating an apparent drowning that happened Tuesday around 3:21 p.m. at the base of the waterfalls at Fawn's Leap. Law enforcement says a group of friends was swimming at Fawn's Leap when the victim jumped off the ledge at the top of the falls with another friend. Both landed in the water near the south side of the base of the falls where the current caused by the waterfall was too strong for them to swim out of.Another swimmer saw them struggling and swam over to try and help. He was able to assist one swimmer but was unable to help the second. The second was later recovered by divers from the State Police. He was pronounced dead at the scene. WATERVLIET, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Watervliet Police Department arrested Justyce Matthew, 48, for animal cruelty. According to the police, a four-year-old French Bulldog suffered from a medical emergency. Matthew, identified as the owner, did not provide the required care.
