Ryan McMahon homers in fourth straight game, but Rockies blow early lead in Arizona Three trends continued for the Colorado Rockies in the opener of their four-game series in Arizona.First, Ryan McMahon stayed scorching hot, blasting a home run for the fourth consecutive game as part of a four-hit day in Monday’s matinee at Chase Field.Second, rookie Karl Kauffman’s introduction to the big leagues remained rocky, as the right-hander got tagged for seven hits (two homers) and seven earned runs over four innings. And, third, the Rockies were roadkill for the fourth game in a row away from Coors Field, falling 7-5 to the NL West’s second-place Diamondbacks to start a seven-game road swing.Arizona erased an early four-run deficit in the bottom of the second inning, with the Diamondbacks plating five runs on six hits against the 25-year-old Kauffman. The big blast was a 426-foot home run from designated hitter Pavin Smith that gave the D-backs a 5-4 lead they never relinquished.Arizona tacked on runs in the third (Gabriel Moreno sac fly) and fourth (Lou...

(Cliff Grassmick/Staff Photographer)Nell Rojas might be a household name in the Boulder running community. Yet back in 2019, when Molly Grabill competed in the Bolder Boulder of the first time, Rojas was a complete stranger.Rojas won the women’s citizen’s race in 2019, and since then has twice posted the top time by an American woman at the Boston Marathon, including last month. Yet that rise to national prominence still was in the future for Rojas on that day four years ago, and Grabill was unfamiliar with the woman who eventually crossed the finish line first.“I’d never heard of Nell before and I was just like, ‘Who’s this chick?’” Grabill recalled with a laugh. “Now we’re training partners.”Rojas did not compete at the 43rd Bolder Boulder on Monday, but she returned to her hometown race as the official starter alongside her father Ric, the winner of the inaugural Bolder Boulder in 1979. Biden calls for repeal of Uganda's anti-gay law, threatens sanctions President Biden called for the immediate repeal of Uganda’s new Anti-Homosexuality Act and warned of possible sanctions in a statement Monday, as his administration evaluates “the implications of this law on all aspects of U.S. engagement with Uganda.” “This shameful Act is the latest development in an alarming trend of human rights abuses and corruption in Uganda.  The dangers posed by this democratic backsliding are a threat to everyone residing in Uganda, including U.S. government personnel, the staff of our implementing partners, tourists, members of the business community, and others,” Biden wrote after lawmakers passed the law, which Uganda’s president subsequently signed into law.The new anti-gay law would impose the death penalty in cases of “aggravated homosexuality” and would impose a life sentence for engaging in gay sex. The state defines “aggravated homosexuality” as homosexual acts carried out by those infected with H.I.V. or homosexual acts that involve children, disa...

Read more Letters to the Editor.Orinda needs to finishfire defense planAs one who witnessed the Oakland Hills Fire, for me wildfires can never be an abstraction. From our orchestra-seats deck, we watched aircraft crisscrossing above us, trailing gouts of water, making desperate lace patterns against the smokey sky, and all the while TV news channels were flashing the header “Orinda Threatened.”Orinda was spared and we were lucky enough to be able to shelter good friends in the wildfires’ aftermath.  But here we are once again at a crossroads, with the following concerns unmet: wildfire evacuation; emergency response capacity; crucial buy-in by Moraga Orinda Fire District/Cal Fire.As a co-leader of Orinda’s incorporation, I sought to empower our community, not endanger it. Just as with incorporation, Orinda is once again being threatened with forfeiting to the political agenda of a more powerful government entity.Once again,...
