Two-time defending champ Rory McIlroy two off lead at RBC Canadian Open Back-to-back birdies to close out the third round put C.T. Pan two strokes up on the field at the RBC Canadian Open, but that lead is far from safe with a pack of big names – and two Canadians – in the hunt.Pan, from Taiwan, shot a 6-under 66 to sit at 14-under overall on Saturday at Oakdale Golf and Country Club in the northwest corner of Toronto. Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy was in a six-way tie for second as he looks for a third consecutive title at the men’s national golf championship.“You still have to play aggressive, because this course is a lot of rough, but if you hit it in the fairway you will have a lot of short irons in and you’re going to create a lot of birdie opportunities,” said Pan, adding that he won’t change too much as he tries to fend off the group tied for second that includes McIlroy, Americans Mark Hubbard, Harry Higgs and Andrew Novak, as well as England’s Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose.“I would...

Mason Toye’s two goals help CF Montreal demolish Loons 4-0 MONTREAL — Minnesota United players might have a ringing in their ears after Saturday’s 4-0 loss to CF Montreal at Saputo Stadium. When CF Montreal scored goals, a large silver bell clanged in celebration behind the north net. Former Loons striker Mason Toye caused the first and third ringings but didn’t add to percussion.Once Toye scored in the seventh and 57th minutes, he respectfully refrained from doing the shaking-maracas celebration he used during his three seasons in Minnesota. His goals showed up his former club enough.Toye’s exit from Minnesota in October 2020 and the big influence he had on the match Saturday provide echo in the club’s always churning conveyor belt of forwards. Before the match, the Loons announced the transfer of Luis Amarill to Mazatlan for an undisclosed fee, ending the Paraguayan’s underwhelming time in Minnesota. They first brought in Amarilla in January 2020 and said goodbye to Toye in October 2020.The club started Mender Garcia at striker but subbed h...

SF Giants nearly no-hit in second straight loss to Cubs SAN FRANCISCO — Mitch Haniger doubled in the eighth inning, averting a no-hitter, but held hitless for more than half the game for the second time in the past week, the Giants on Saturday were not able to awaken their bats in time to pull off the come-from-behind win.Haniger’s double and a walk to Michael Conforto in the second inning were the only base runners the Giants managed against Chicago starter Kyle Hendricks, who flirted with what would have been the first no-hitter by an opponent in Oracle Park’s 23-year history, in their second straight loss to the Cubs, 4-0.Hendricks needed only 94 pitches to mow down the Giants for eight innings, only giving way to a reliever after San Francisco mustered its first hit in the eighth, and was reminiscent of Greg Maddux for more reasons than his pitch count. The 33-year-old right-hander from Newport Beach masterfully mixed and matched his four-pitch arsenal, not registering one reading on the radar gun of even 90 mph.Often str...

He was then yanked by coach David Esquer in favor of freshman Matt Scott. When the righthander got light-hitting nine-hole hitter Mitchell Daly to fly out to right, he got no help from his team.Right fielder Saborn Campbell muffed the running catch when center fielder Eddie Park flashed in front of him, allowing two runs to score.A groundout drove in another, and after a couple walks loaded the bases again, Texas left fielder Porter Brown completed the comeback. He laced the ball into right field, dropping the pitch right in front of Campbell and driving in two more Texas runs.Longhorn reliever Zane Morehouse made quick work of the middle of the Cardinal o...
