By Meg Kinnard | Associated PressWith roughly a year and a half until the 2024 presidential contest, the field of candidates is largely set.Former President Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis have dominated the early Republican race as the other candidates look for an opening to take them on. President Joe Biden faces a couple of Democratic challengers but is expected to secure his party’s nomination. Here’s a look at the candidates competing for the Republican and Democratic nominations:REPUBLICAN PRIMARY FIELDDONALD TRUMPThe former president announced his third campaign for the White House on Nov. 15 at his Mar-a-Lago resort, forcing the party to again decide whether to embrace a candidate whose refusal to accept defeat in 2020 sparked the U.S. Capitol attack and still dominates his speeches. The GOP front-runner remains hugely popular in the Republican Party, despite making history as the first president to be impeached twice and inciting the Capitol insurrectio...Legendary rocker makes an appearance during intimate all-star jazz show

Cindy Blackman Santana knows how to throw a party. And she proved it once again as she celebrated the amazing legacy and music of the late great drummer Tony Williams during the 40th annual San Francisco Jazz Festival at the SFJAZZ Center on Wednesday (June 14).Her star-studded guest list included guitarist Vernon Reid (from Living Colour), organist John Medeski (from Medeski Martin and Wood) and her guitar-legend husband, Carlos Santana.Yet, the true star of the show was drummer Blackman-Santana herself, which was a highly appropriate — and even expected — turn of events given the fact that we were all gathering together for a tribute to a man who made such incredible music on the drumkit during a career that stretched from the early ’60s until his death at the age of 51 in 1997 in Daly City. The longtime Bay Area resident, who was born in Chicago, came to fame as a member of Miles Davis’ appropriately nicknamed “Second Great Quintet,” which also f...How much prison time could Donald Trump be facing?

By Eric Tucker and Alanna Durkin Richer | Associated PressWASHINGTON — The FBI investigators who searched Harold Martin’s Maryland property in the fall of 2016 found classified documents — including material at the top secret level — strewn about his home, car and storage shed.Unlike former President Donald Trump, the former National Security Agency contractor didn’t contest the allegations, ultimately pleading guilty in 2019 and admitting his actions were “wrong, illegal and highly questionable.” But his expressions of contrition and guilty plea to a single count of willful retention of national defense information didn’t spare him the harsh punishment of nine years in prison. The resolution of that case looms as an ominous guidepost for the legal jeopardy Trump could face as he confronts 37 felony counts — 31 under the same century-old Espionage Act statute used to prosecute Martin and other defendants alleged to have illegally retained classified docu...Oakland teen pleads to probation in gun case that stemmed from investigation into killings of Berkeley brothers

OAKLAND — A 19-year-old man who was arrested on gun charges during an ongoing police investigation into the killings of two Berkeley brothers at an Oakland house party has pleaded no contest in exchange for a probation term, court records show.Jesse Moreno, of Oakland, pleaded no contest to being a juvenile offender in possession of a firearm on May 9 at a hearing before Judge Elena Condes. He was formally sentenced to two years probation on June 7, records show.Moreno was named as a person of interest in the investigation into the Oct. 1, 2022 killings of Jazy Sotelo Garcia, 17, and Angel Sotelo Garcia, 15, but has not been charged. At the May 9 hearing, county prosecutors made it clear the plea deal contains no promises about the double homicide investigation, should evidence of his possible involvement surface. If Moreno violates his probation, he could be sentenced to up to three years in prison, according to the terms of the deal. The brothers were shot and killed around 10...Las Vegas native Bryce Harper says A’s shouldn’t abandon Oakland

Bryce Harper and the Phillies are coming to Oakland this weekend. By the time they visit the A’s next year, though, the games might be in Las Vegas, Harper’s hometown. That doesn’t mean Harper would be happy to be going home for that series.“It should have been an expansion franchise, not the A’s,’’ Harper told USA Today’s Bob Nightengale in a piece posted Thursday morning. He then contrasted the A’s with the NHL’s Golden Knights, who won the Stanley Cup on Tuesday night.“Look at the Knights, they won the Cup, but they were an expansion franchise. They were Vegas-born, as people would say. It’s the first team that came to Vegas. I don’t think you can really match that.”Harper and teammate Bryson Stott, also a Las Vegas-area native, said the Raiders have not captured the city’s support in the same way that the Golden Knights have. Stott said he has seen a lot of visiting fans at NFL games in Vegas and attributed that to the Raiders...Cinemark and Westfield abandoning downtown SF just the latest in string of bad news

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- The troubles for San Francisco's beleaguered downtown continued this week with the news Monday that Westfield would be pulling out from operating SF's biggest mall and that one of the mall's tenants, the Cinemark Century SF Centre 9 theater will go dark this week. This one-two punch is just the latest in a series of blows to the city's struggling downtown. Westfield has owned and operated the San Francisco Centre on Market Street for over 20 years. The retail chain, which is based in France, cited "challenging operating conditions" and other now-familiar factors as reasons for forfeiting on its loan for the SF mall.
