By Isabella O’Malley, Brittany Peterson and Drew Costley | Associated PressSchools in New Delhi were forced to close Monday after heavy monsoon rains battered the Indian capital, with landslides and flash floods killing at least 15 people over the last three days. Farther north, the overflowing Beas River swept vehicles downstream as it flooded neighborhoods. In Japan, torrential rain pounded the southwest, causing floods and mudslides that left two people dead and at least six others missing Monday. Local TV showed damaged houses in Fukuoka prefecture and muddy water from the swollen Yamakuni River appearing to threaten a bridge in the town of Yabakei. In Ulster County, in New York’s Hudson Valley and in Vermont, some said the flooding is the worst they’ve seen since Hurricane Irene’s devastation in 2011.Although destructive flooding in India, Japan, China, Turkey and the United States might seem like distant events, atmospheric scientists say they have this ...SF Giants’ top pick Bryce Eldridge on being labeled American Shohei: ‘I want to be my own version’

No need for Bryce Eldridge to use his scholarship offer to play baseball at Alabama as leverage for a contract with the Giants. After being selected with the No. 16 pick in the first round Sunday night to pursue his dream of being a two-way player in the big leagues, Eldridge made it clear Monday he’d bypass his college commitment.“I will be signing,” Eldridge said in a teleconference with Bay Area media. “I had two good options and I’m blessed to be where I’m at right now.”Eldridge, 18, is a 6-foot-7, 223-pound first baseman/outfielder and pitcher from James Madison High in Vienna, Va. with prodigious power in both areas. Throws right, bats left. Kind of like, well, you know, Shohei Ohtani, who checks in at 6-4, 209 and has lit up major league baseball in both areas since he arrived from Japan in 2018.Dubbed “American Shohei” or “American Ohtani” in some quarters, Eldridge isn’t shying away from the comparison.&...San Rafael PD releases surveillance photos of 2 women accused of stealing dog

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The delivery of humanitarian aid to Syria’s rebel-held northwest from neighboring Turkey is virtually certain to get a green light to continue from the U.N. Security Council — but the big question is for how long. The council’s current authorization for aid deliveries through the Bab al-Hawa crossing is set to expire Monday, but the council has two rival extension resolutions before it to vote on. A Russian resolution would continue aid deliveries for six months and a Brazil-Switzerland resolution backed by most council members and Secretary-General Antonio Guterres would authorize a 12-month extension. The vote had been scheduled for Monday but was delayed until Tuesday morning.Brazil, Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates are seeking a compromise with Russia on the time frame and a vote could take place later Monday or Tuesday, diplomats said, speaking on condition of anonymity because discussions have been private. The delivery of aid to the area has increas...2023 All-Star Game Starting Lineups
