Parker Gabriel, Broncos beat reporter: Welcome back to the roundtable, dudes. Improbably, the Denver Broncos Football Club finally lost a game. Pretty impressive to reel off five straight and go from Oct. 12 to Dec. 3 without taking an ‘L.’ Now Sean Payton’s team has to win four of its final five to have a real chance at making the postseason. Here’s an interesting conundrum — or opportunity, depending on how you look at it. Four of the Broncos’ final five games feature opponents that currently rank in the bottom 12 of the league in pass defense efficiency. So, too, were the Texans. Denver still ended up running the ball 30 times against Houston, though some of that was due to called passes that quarterback Russell Wilson turned into rush attempts. Even still, you could sense the way in which Payton and the Denver offense wanted to attack down the field given Houston’s vulnerabilities on the back end. The big plays in the passing game returne...Editorial: Denver needs more condos when a mid-range metro home costs $625,000

The housing market has cooled this winter and the median sale price for single-family homes in metro Denver was down 3.1% from October. But don’t celebrate just yet. The cost of single-family homes is still at an astounding mid-point price of $625,000. That price point is simply unsustainable for hard-working Coloradans.Colorado needs more condos for sale on the market.Multi-unit for-sale homes are a critical piece of the state’s affordability puzzle – often selling for significantly less per square foot than single-family homes or townhouses. Land has become so valuable in Colorado that anything less than multi-unit construction is a luxury. The mid-point price for metro Denver condos in October was $418,000.But construction of condos has long lagged behind in this state. According to a new white paper put out by the Common Sense Institute, a conservative-leaning think-tank, only 515 building permits for condominium projects were pulled last year. The paper notes that for-sale multi...Man killed by gunman in East Los Angeles barbershop

Defense attorney Michael Schwartz stood beneath the clock in courtroom 2F at the Larson Justice Center in Indio on Wednesday, Dec. 6, and, during his opening statement in the voluntary manslaughter trial of a former Los Angeles Police Department officer, directed the jurors’ attention to the second hand on the dial.“Count three seconds,” said the attorney for Salvador Alejandro Sanchez, who was off duty and not in uniform on June 14, 2019, when he responded to an unprovoked blindside punch by Kenneth French with a volley of 10 shots that killed French and wounded parents Russell and Paola French in the Costco in Corona. “That’s how much time my client had after being punched so hard that his head hit the concrete with a thump.“That’s how much time he had (to assess) where the threat was, who the threat was and whether there was still a threat,” Schwartz said. “One … two … three.”No one is disputing that Sanchez was responsible for the gunfire in the crowded deli. More than 100 LA-area cardroom employees and supporters gathered Wednesday, Dec. 6 in Fullerton to protest a bill they fear could fuel wide-ranging job and revenue losses for their industry. The rally was held outside the office of Democratic state Sen. Josh Newman whose Senate Bill 549 — otherwise known as the Tribal Declaratory Relief Act of 2023 — has reignited a decades-long conflict between tribal casinos and cardroom operators.Opponents of the bill say the casinos are simply looking for a way to squash competition from cardrooms.Federally recognized tribes have the freedom to offer slot machines, lottery games and “banked” card games — like traditional blackjack, in which the casino acts as the bank handling wagers.Cardrooms, by contrast, can only provide “player-dealer” games, such as poker, pai gow, baccarat and Texas Hold ‘Em.SB 549 would provide standing for Indian casinos to sue cardroom operators they claim are operating “banking card games” in violation of state law and ...Latest news
