After his team’s brutal overtime loss to the Hornets earlier this week, Kristaps Porzingis acknowledged that the Celtics will win most games because of their talent. But, the big man cautioned, they don’t want to become a team that relies on that. They want to be a team in Joe Mazzulla’s vision, one that shows up every night with the same mindset and effort no matter the opponent. That’s still a work in progress. Two nights after their best win of the young season over the Bucks, the Celtics fell back to earth on Friday afternoon in Orlando, where they were punked and bullied by the upstart Magic. They lost their way over the course of a disastrous second half in their largest loss of the season, a 113-96 laugher. The Celtics missed their chance to clinch a berth into the In-Season Tournament’s quarterfinals with a victory, but Mazzulla will be far more concerned with the troubling trends that followed his team in Orlando. This was always going to be a tough game for the Celtics, who we...Boston College closes out regular season with a 45-20 home loss to Miami

On the 39th anniversary of Doug Flutie’s game-winning Hail Mary pass to Gerard Phelan in Miami, Boston College didn’t have a prayer of knocking off the Hurricanes on Saturday at Alumni Stadium.Miami piled up 532 yards of total offense and rolled to a 45-20 victory over BC on Senior Day at the Heights. BC lost its third straight to finish 6-6 and 3-5 in the ACC.“They are a talented group and I thought they played well,” said BC head coach Jeff Hafley. “We had a chance to make some plays on defense but they made some plays and we didn’t. I’m proud of the way the guys fought in the second half.”The Eagles’ dismal showing against the Hurricanes likely cost them a trip to the Pinstripe Bowl against Rutgers or Maryland. The game at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, N.Y., is a third tier ACC bowl that is aligned exclusively with the Big Ten.The bottom tier bowls available to BC are the Wasabi Fenway Bowl at Fenway Park on Dec. 28 against an opponent from the AAC, possibly SMU, Memphis or ...Why do the Chicago Bulls keep missing layups? A look at one of this season’s most ‘deflating’ statistics.

For their first 24 minutes in the game against the Thunder in Oklahoma City on Wednesday, the Chicago Bulls couldn’t hit a shot if it wasn’t behind the 3-point arc.Coby White kept the Bulls in the game by hitting six 3-pointers — three times as many shots as the entire offense was able to make from inside the restricted area.Eventually, the offense kicked back into a more regular gear. But that first half drudged up a familiar frustration for an offense struggling to find any sort of spark — why can’t the Bulls hit their layups?“When that happens it gets a bit deflating,” coach Billy Donovan said. “You’re gonna get down the way we got down when you don’t shoot the ball from anywhere. That’s been the issue for us. We’ve had a couple halves where we’ve had 39 or 40 points. We, for whatever reason, haven’t been able to shoot the ball consistently through the course of the game.”Last season, the Bu...Soleiman Faqiri’s death left family ‘adrift,’ coroner’s inquest hears

The family of a mentally ill man who died in his cell at an Ontario jail nearly seven years ago has told a coroner’s inquest that his death has left a “deep, painful hole” in their lives.A statement by Soleiman Faqiri’s older brother, Yusuf Faqiri, on behalf of the family was read by coroner’s counsel Friday afternoon at the inquest into the 30-year-old man’s death. In it, Yusuf Faqiri described his brother as a devoted son and sibling who “always put family first,” a gifted scholar and chess player, and a “source of wisdom” for many around him.The statement says Soleiman Faqiri helped his father manage his business, taught his mother how to read Arabic and Farsi, and supported his sister when she wanted to leave a bad marriage. It says Faqiri was “an anchor” and his death has left his family “adrift.”The inquest has heard Faqiri was arrested in early December 2016 after allegedly stabbing a neighbour ...5 family members and a commercial fisherman neighbor are ID’d as dead or missing in Alaska landslide

Ontario’s police watchdog has been called in by its Nova Scotia counterpart to review new information unearthed by the inquiry into the 2020 mass shooting in the Maritime province.Nova Scotia’s Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) confirmed Friday that Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit recently determined the inquiry, which released its final report in March, had yielded new information about two RCMP officers who shot at a firehall as they were searching for the killer, who was disguised as a Mountie. The Nova Scotia team issued a statement saying the Ontario agency has agreed to conduct another independent review to determine if the new information would have had any impact on SIRT’s decision in March 2021 to clear the officers of wrongdoing. The statement says nothing about the nature of that information. The federal-provincial inquiry heard that the suspect, who killed 22 people and was later shot dead by other officers, was not at the Onslow, N.S., fir...Federal policing watchdog probing B.C. RCMP unit experiencing ‘significant delays’

OTTAWA — The federal agency tasked with reviewing complaints against the RCMP says the police force is causing “significant delays” in an investigation of a unit set up to deal with protests of energy and logging industry projects. In an investigation update this week, the Civilian Review and Complaints Commission for the RCMP says it has received “little information or records” since July from the police force’s E Division, headquartered in Surrey, B.C.The commission says it has made progress in its probe of the controversial Community-Industry Response Unit, but says finishing the investigation will be delayed. It says a recent meeting between the commission and the RCMP outlined “concerns about the delays,” and the force has since provided it with more than 400 files, though “significant” information is yet to be provided. The commission hired a law firm to help in its “systemic investigation” to interview people wh...Pro-Palestinian protesters continue calls for ceasefire in Gaza amid march along Michigan Ave.
