Editor’s Note: The video above shows KXAN News Today’s top headlines for July 5, 2023.AUSTIN (KXAN) -- As many gathered to celebrate the Fourth of July Tuesday, Austin Fire Department dispatchers answered roughly 300 calls regarding fireworks-related incidents, the department said in a tweet Wednesday.Of the 300 calls received, approximately 250 of them related to grass, dumpster and trash fires. The agency also responded to a handful of structure fires. A city-adopted ordinance prohibits the storage, use and handling of fireworks within Austin city limits. TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A Troy Police canine (K9) was stabbed 12 times while responding to a burglary early Wednesday morning in the area of Donegal Avenue in the Emerald Greens neighborhood. Police responded to reports of an unknown suspect attempting to break entry into residencies. Troy police say K9 Norbi began tracking the suspect and led the officers into a wooded area near Donegal Avenue. Norbi and his handler found the suspect in a wooded area and tried taking him into custody. While doing so, the suspect started stabbing Norbi with a knife multiple times, per Troy police. Norbi was removed from the situation by his handler and was taken to nearby Upstate Veterinary Specialties for evaluation and treatment. CAMDEN COUNTY, Mo. - An investigation is underway after a six-year-old boy drowned in the Lake of the Ozarks on the Fourth of July. The Missouri State Highway Patrol has not disclosed the boy's identity, but says he is from Camdenton, Missouri. The drowning happened around 6 p.m. Tuesday near the 66 mile mark of the main channel of Lick Creek Cove. SLMPD investigating several overnight shootings Investigators say the boy was not wearing a life jacket and jumped voluntarily into the water on a lily pad. After that, he went underwater and did not resurface for an undisclosed amount of time. The victim was rushed to a hospital, but later pronounced dead from his injuries. A 6-year-old boy was struck by what appeared to be a stray bullet while watching 4th of July fireworks in the Central-Alameda neighborhood of Los Angeles Tuesday night, leaving him in critical condition.The incident occurred around 9 p.m. as the boy was standing outside his apartment building in the 700 block of East 40th Place, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson confirmed. The boy's parents noticed he had been struck by something falling from the sky but didn't know what it was. They tried taking the child to the hospital but ended up flagging down officers in the area of East Jefferson Boulevard and San Pedro Street. A Simi Valley man is facing a felony charge after police say he pulled out a gun, racked the slide and pointed it at neighbors who were setting off fireworks.The confrontation drew officers to the intersection of Fitzgerald and Appleton roads at about 10 p.m., the Simi Valley Police Department said in a news release. It was there where local residents were setting off fireworks in the street until Daoud Yahya approached, produced a handgun, racked the slide — if the gun was loaded, this would have chambered a round — and pointed it at the group, causing them to flee, police said.Yahya, who jail records say is 28, then returned to a home in the 1000 block of Appleton Road. At least one deputy from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department opened fire on a man in Santa Clarita Tuesday night, sending him to the hospital.The unidentified man was shot at 11:42 p.m. in the 24200 Block of Arch Street, and he was taken to a local hospital to be treated for his wounds, the LASD said in a news release.
