Elias: Newsom-DeSantis debate may mean more in 2028 than 2024 Think for a moment about a few political facts such as this one: California Gov. Gavin Newsom is among President Biden’s most vociferous backers, and now may be too late for Biden to back out of next year’s campaign. Here’s another: Newsom’s second and final term as governor ends almost two years before the next presidential election.Related ArticlesLocal News | Elias: Basing Californians’ electricity rates on income unworkable Local News | Elias: Contrary to some claims, California friendly to certain businesses Local News | Elias: Newsom’s gun control amendment may open Pandora’s box So Newsom must have realized early on that if he ever wants to be president, he must establish himself as a major national Democratic figure independent of the office he now holds. Would toll lanes improve commutes on south side of Capital Beltway? Virginia is considering extending the Express Lanes by 11 miles, from where they currently end in Springfield, through Alexandria, over the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, to the Route 210 interchange in Maryland. The Virginia Department of Transportation’s I-495 Southside Express Lanes Study, which began last year, is contemplating a variety of options to deal with typically heavy weekday traffic. According to VDOT, the heaviest traveled segment is between U.S. Route 1 in Alexandria and Interstate 295 at the Wilson Bridge. When the Wilson Bridge was rebuilt in the early 2000s, space was preserved on the bridge decks for future projects.Among the study’s potential configurations across the bridge are two express lanes in each direction or one lane for rapid bus or Metrorail if the system were extended to the National Harbor area. Two public meetings are being held this week: Tuesday, a virtual public meeting will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., with details on how to attend ava...

Fine Weather, but Hot & Humid The weather in South Florida has been fine with hot and humid conditions continuing. There is a chance of seeing some showers and an isolated storm favoring inland areas and Gulf coast due to a build breeze out of the East-Northeast. By Wednesday, temperatures will be nearing-record levels with highs in the low to mid 90’s as a front moves into North Florida. Late week a slot of drier air should limit showers from developing, but temporarily. Most models are showing deeper moisture getting trapped across South Florida with a front stalling over North-Central Florida this weekend. Therefore, it could turn wetter starting Friday.
